checking listings

I have been testing some of my titles and tags by entering them in the search bar and most of the keywords i typed show up at least one of my products on the first page with a few more on the second page.
Not sure if i am just entering biased search terms- but should i leave my listings alone if this is the case?
I also wanted to ask about repeating titles most of the time i just copy a listing and tweak it to add colour of fabric pattern to the description is this something that makes a difference to search results?

Re: checking listings

I've been having similar issues. I think that some of the small things we may think of as sellers, and knowing our products so well may not be what the buyer searches for.

What I've taken to doing to check if my tags are relevant is go to the search bar and type my first word of my tag and see what pops up. For example I typed in crochet to see what the most common searches for and saw that bag or purse was part of the top, so I know that if I tag my listing with those keywords I should be more relevant to the buyers searches. Not everyone knows what special technique or material you may have used, so including that might not be the most optimal use of your tags.

I don't see why repeating the listing title but changing for color if the item is essentially the same, it might actually help get more hits, I would think.
Hope this helps!

Re: checking listings

Frey, if a simple tweak of the title to change the fabric type or colour works then I would stick with it.

I do exactly the same thing. I'll have a certain yarn available in a number of colours and I'll simply change the colour in the title and sometimes move the key phrases around a bit as well.

If its not broken, don't fix it.

Some of my item titles haven't been changed in almost 6 years now and they still keep selling.

Re: checking listings

The only way you will know whether your keywords and phrases are effective is if you are getting views and sales.

You can tell via keyword research (google's keyword tool is helpful) what phrases and keywords are more and less popular, and get some ideas for new ones you might not have thought of.

Regarding titling everything the same but changing the color:

I sell a very limited range of products.

I could title half my items "Iron On Name Tags" and just change the character ("Iron on Name Tags- elephants" or "Iron on name tags - butterflies) but I don't, because there are a lot more ways people search for what I sell than just the phrase "Iron on name tags" in that word order.

If I title everything the same, I'm wasting an enormous opportunity to catch buyers who are searching for my kind of items with slightly different wording - "kids name tags" or "clothing tags" or whatever.
