Things are tough when your category has 2,000,000 items, and you have 40.
You must do everything possible to give yourself a chance to be found. I dont see that in threads compalining about low views.
And, it isnt that hard, nor does it take much time to have good tags and titles. Ignore all that constant "tweaking" noise you read about. Do it right the first time, and you can spend the tweaking time making things.

I have learned the following from the Queen of SEO:

1.Your title is not the name of your item. It is a 70 character string whose goal is to get your item found by etsy search.

2. If you cant tell exactly what the item is by reading your tags, your tags stink. Those words are what people search on. If I had a dime for every purple necklace that had neither purple nor necklace in the tags, I would have a lot of dimes.

3. Words in your title must show up in your tags. If Blue scarf is in your title, blue scarf needs to be in your tags.

4. Use as many of the 20 characters in your tags as possible. Blue scarf as one tag is better than blue, then scarf as two tags.

5.Read about SEO at cindys seo group. she is very wise. http://www.etsy.com/teams/10713/cindylouwho-team/discuss/10196168/

the end

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

I have put my title in my tags and don't seem to have very many views. I have tried to think of other things to put , but can not come up with anything else. Am I doing this right?? Thanks all!

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

Wow! This one piece is a HUGE help for me.

3. Words in your title must show up in your tags. If Blue scarf is in your title, blue scarf needs to be in your tags.

I just figured that if it was in my title it didn't need to be in my tags because that would be redundant.

Thanks Alex!

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

Ok, I'm going to stick my toe in the water. I've been reading a lot lately about tags and titles and have gone back and revised many. I'm also working on retaking my pictures. The 5 or 6 items I listed today look much better. It's a work in progress getting the pictures of my older stuff taken again.

How are my titles and tags?

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

Anyone who would like to give me some feedback or critique would be very appreciated!
I know I need more items in my shop, I'm working on that part. But I just went thru my shop all last week and revise all my titles and tags, I am part of the Cindy Lou Who team, so I've been reading a lot on there about titles and tags and all that fun stuff. I thought that I was on the right track with titles and tags, and the top thing that brings people to my shop is search, which is great! But...my views have dropped drastically since mid October...I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Would anyone like to take a look at my shop?
I also have a Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (all linked together) and post on there regularly (and not just links to my shop.)
Thanks everyone! :)

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

I admit, that I didn't read through 74 pages of posts now, so forgive me if this has been asked before :)

I am sure I read somewhere that the categories you choose for your listing like "handmade", "jewellery", "necklace" are automatically used as tags by Etsy.
True or false?

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

Thanks for the tips and link, Alex! SEO-tweaking has been giving me headaches for the past couple of weeks. I had 200 items to correct. Still working on it. New photos are next. I'm so glad I didn't already upload and list my entire 'made' inventory before understanding all the changes in Google and Etsy. I apparently missed an important year in Etsy-land.

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

Hi Diana

Yes you are right. The three categories you choose (ie Jewelry, Pendant, Glass) are automatically added as tags so there is no need to add them again. This means that you actually get 16 tags in all

If you look at a listing they are the first 3 tags

Re: Why you are not getting found newbies

wow. it lives

when I started this, I was just starting to get a handle on seo for etsy.

That was 300+ critiques ago.

There is no better way to learn how to properly title and tag your items than by doing critiques.
You may not be very good in the beginning like me, but if you check your work, study the search results, things will start to make sense.
eventually.

I learn something new each time I do one.

like there are different versions of a word that etsy search sees the same

there are different versions of a word it reads differently.

knowing what those words are, and what that all means can give you a nice edge.

my team will be doing a webinar on these things which you can see 9/13

you can sign up here under events.

https://www.facebook.com/events/457392747701246/

we ran out of time to discuss how to cram a 22 character phrase into a 20 character tag.
that will be the next one
