What does 'direct traffic' mean?

So, today I went to look at my shop stats for yesterday. 16 views. Now, that's actually pretty high for me. The funny thing about it was that one was from Google, 15 from direct traffic. So my question is... What does direct traffic mean? Any help would be appreciated.

direct traffic is people surfing Etsy and come across your page or while searching for something your item comes up and the click to view it.

Actually, my understanding is that "direct traffic" means someone either typed in your etsy shop's address and went straight there, or followed a link that took them directly to your shop or one of your listings. People surfing on Etsy or searching on Google would appear as such in your stats.

I have a related question. When I first opened shop, the vast majority of my traffic was direct traffic. Now it's way, way down. Google seems to send the majority of my traffic. What could cause such a shift?

Also, how does traffic from searches on Etsy show up?

I was wondering if it is people working for etsy drumming up traffic to my site, for etsy gets paid for each item that is sold. Nothing wrong with that but just seems odd after selling a piece I have so many views and when I check out the site that is viewing my work they have nothing to sell, so my guess is it must be the etsy team.

Some direct traffic is bots, usually after posting to a site like Wanelo.

Right after the words 'Direct Traffic' in your stats there is a question mark which (when you place your cursor on it) answers your question.

Since the middle of December, I've been getting a lot of direct traffic in batches of 20 / 30 / 40 in one go, all coming from the US. Most of the times these views come at the wee hours of the morning (US time)....I don't think US customers rolled out of bed and came to my shop to have a look around. I'm not convinced these are real, genuine views.

Otherwise, direct traffic is what the others said above.
