What do you think?

I just made this listing. I thought it was a good idea and wanted to know if this would make a good custom order. Here is the listing, what are your thoughts https://www.etsy.com/listing/161360250/baby-boy-tie-onesie-made-to-order-you?ref=shop_home_active

Re: What do you think?

I'm sure it would work fine but you're not supposed to post the listings in here, sometimes seen as advertising. Just a heads up

Re: What do you think?

As a customer I would prefer to see the listing completed... I don't know if I would be comfortable ordering a variation unless it was just a color change (even then I would like to see the colors presented in one of the pictures). I think a separate listing of each option would be better... it would give you more opportunities to be found by altering the tags, increase your inventory, it would also help customers to know "exactly" what they are purchasing and what they should expect. Hope that helps.

Re: What do you think?

Thank you, I've seen other shops do it and didn't know how successful they have been. I just wanted to give it a try.

Re: What do you think?

To be brutally honest, I don't think it looks very professionally made.
It seems "unfinished" in it's look, and the price seems high.

I searched for "custom baby onesie" and came up with many more professionally made items, selling for close to the same price as yours.

For example, there was a shop with the babies' name appliqued onto the onesie, like 5 or 6 letters and some cute little flowers, for $24. And a great picture of a baby wearing it.
I'd buy that one in a second, if I was shopping for this type of item.

Though I don't have babies, if I were looking for something like this, I would not order from you.
Sorry...

Re: What do you think?

Thank you Laurie, I don't have anything to embroider names on. I also don't really have any models that I can get. A lady from my church is having a baby next month so maybe when he gets older can use him.

Re: What do you think?

I would suggest taking great care to present your detail work in its best light. The one in the photo doesn't do that. The stitching isn't even, and frankly, it looks a bit unprofessional. I think the concept is good, though. Good luck!

Re: What do you think?

Thanks Betty. It's been so hot outside that its hard to take photos before you're sweating. I looked at the photos and don't know what you mean by the stitching being uneven. But thanks anyway.

Re: What do you think?

Do you have permission to use the Trademark 'Star Wars' ?

Do you have permission from Gerber to use the trademark 'Onesie"?

I would suggest that you figure out how to make your stitches and your pieces much more uniform as the various ties you are displaying both on and off the baby shirt don't really appear to have had that much care taken in the construction.

Since you are offering items for babies and toddlers, are you following all the CPSIA guidelines?

I'm almost 16, my parents work with me on the store. They know what I'm posting when I'm posting and what I'm doing to get more views.

Re: What do you think?

Olivia, they are pretty cute. Just be aware of the copyright with some of the images you're using.

I do not like the zig-zag stitch. Perhaps use a straight stitch and remember to fold in the seems and stitch on top of that so there is no raw edge. Also, make them smaller? Like a little baby tie? You could also do bow ties too!

Re: What do you think?

Thanks Katie. Still a learn in progress even though it's been almost two years tomorrow. I've been trying to make ties they just don't turn out the way I want them, along with bow ties. I'm trying to get some of those things done.

Re: What do you think?

Have you tried applique with the ties, with bondaweb? (that glue stuff) Then you can create them as large as you like or as small, then you can straight stitch on the edges.

Re: What do you think?

You might just try a much closer together zigzag; set your stitch length to between 0 and 1. Like this: http://thediymommy.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Blue-Stripes-2.jpg

Then find a way to order your onesies in bulk: http://www.kidsblanks.com/baby-one-piece-short-sleeve-wholesale.html

Re: What do you think?

Also think about how to differentiate yourself from your competition. There are lots of other sellers making this product, so you'll need an edge. You can either charge less than everyone else, do it faster than everyone else, or make the product in a different way.

What can you change about the product that will make it unique? You can use different colored base onesies, maybe some really bright colors you don't see much for kids. You can use exotic fabrics, prints you can't find at JoAnn - maybe some Liberty of London florals, or a shiny silk. You could offer to make the tie out of one of dad's old shirts, maybe.

Re: What do you think?

Thanks Matthew and Sara. I'm trying to stand out, a lot of people love my Star Wars Ties. I try using prints that you don't normally see. I think I might just have to try something out of dads old shirts. Not sure how well it'll do but, I can always give it a try.

Re: What do you think?

Star wars can be a bit of a problem sometimes because they pursue their copyright/trademark. There are some people who will tell you that you can use fabric printed with trademarked characters because of the first sale doctrine, and others who will tell you it's illegal; I can't really figure it out either way. At the very least, you should make it absolutely clear that you're not affiliated with Star wars and that it is just something made using Star Wars fabric (for instance, I would avoid titling it "star wars onesie").

Re: What do you think?

Also, be careful with the tag blankets. There's a company that has that design patented and from what I've read they're pretty aggressive.

Re: What do you think?

Okay thank you, I don't know what word I use instead of Star Wars. When people use search it normally says "Star Wars Baby Boy Onesie" Or things along the lines.

Re: What do you think?

Right, but that kind of suggests that you're affiliated with Star Wars, which you're not. That's what the trademark is there to protect - they want to protect who is presenting themselves as part of the Star Wars brand.

So if you're going to use the fabric, I'd make it really clear that you're using the fabric and are not affiliated with Star Wars. You could say "Baby Boy Romper, tie applique outfit using Star Wars fabric" or something like that.
