What am I doing wrong...

Hi everyone.

My name is April and I'm a new Etsy vendor (only one week active with my shop) so I'm as green as they come. I've put my best foot forward, but find myself in need of some good strong council/ advice.

As artists/crafters, we invest a lot of time and effort into our work to make sure that it's "perfect" before we show it to anyone. Our shops are a direct reflection of us...so I, like you, want to do it right.

It is in this spirit that I'm asking all of you for your critique of my shop... thebijouxboxboutique.

The purpose of this discussion is to foster open, honest dialogue amongst ourselves about our own, and each other's shops.

What works, and what doesn't.

I find that if I look at something for too long, I can no longer see my own mistakes. I'm hoping that we all can be "a fresh set of eyes" for each other.

Whether it be something as simple as a misspelled word, or major like a mismatched picture and item description, we can use this page to gently help each other add polish to our shops, and point out errors to us before our customers do.

(After all, nobody wants to argue with a customer over a $50.00 item that you'll have to sell for $5.00 because a zero was missing or the decimal point was in the wrong place.)

I hope this page will useful to you all and I look forward to input.

Hi, April, congratulations on launching your shop!

Many of your photos, including your banner photo, are out of focus. Fix the photos and you will be well on your way!

Re: What am I doing wrong...

Hello April,

With your store in this shape are you really not seeing any problems yourself? Then my first advice is to scrutinize your own work. It may sound harsh but you aren't doing yourself any favors by talking about grammar and mismatched pictures....

Some quick pointers:
1. Redo every photo
2. Include more photos per listing
3. Spruce up item descriptions
4. Change banner and store photo (right now it looks much too unprofessional)
5. Criticize yourself in everything you do in the store

You will make many mistakes and it will take a lot of time to get customers and life into your store so above all be patient and always open to change. I wish you the best!

Re: What am I doing wrong...

Congrats on starting your store! That's a huge step, and many people don't ever get started! So Good Job!

Your photos are one of the most important part of your online store. Your customers will not get to see, touch or feel your jewelry, so it's really important to give them a good experience through your photos.

What are you using to take photos? You can get inexpensive digital cameras even a used one and use the macro setting on the camera to make sure your pictures are in focus and clear.

If you have a cell phone, you can take great pictures also, just make sure you are close to a bright window, and get real close to your item to take a picture, don't stand back and then crop the photo afterwards...get in there real close and intimate with your jewelry :).

I did not get into any of your actual listings to look for any other types of mistakes, because you really need to fix the photos!

I hope this helps :)

Cheers, and wishing you all the best!

Yes, you need to fix your photos first. Online shoppers reply heavily on photos. Unfortunately, I'm afraid your photos won't attract buyers. :(

Re: What am I doing wrong...

THE TRIBE HAS SPOKEN!!!!!

Thank you one and all. I really appreciate this,

I have been using my cell phone camera to take the pictures and focus/ lightning issues are indeed a problem. I used Pic Monkey and Pixlr Express to clean them up, but obviously I need a good camera.

Josee, you are definitely on point. I have been shooting from a distance and editing afterwards. I wiil apply your strategy tonight to see if I get better results.

Onwards and upwards, with much thanks.

April :)

Re: What am I doing wrong...

I don't think you need a good camera. I use my phone to take all of my pictures and also edit on PicMonkey. Maybe you are too far away, which is why the pictures end up so blurry. Get a little closer, but still give yourself some room for editing. It takes practice and patience when learning.
Make sure the end pixels are 1000x1000, that is what I use.
