Using variation listings for shipping options ?

Is it allowed to use variations in listings for shipping options ?

I have these lovely 1868 illustrations that are just too large to fit into envelopes that qualify as letters here in Switzerland, where shipping is very expensive. I am reluctant to trim them as they are lovely so I was thinking of giving the customer the choice, to get the prints whole in an oversize mailer and pay 30$ for shipping or to get the print trimmed, with shipping under 10$. What do you think ?

I don't know if it is allowed. But, if in variations there is a choice of sizes and you can specify the price difference is due to shipping and size then I think you should be able to offer it.

I don't see any reason why you can't use the variations in that way.

But I'd be sure to spell it out completely in the item description as well.

Remember too that you pay Etsy fees on the selling price but not on the shipping charge so you will be paying Etsy fees when you sell using the variations.

That's true. But I don't really know how to do it differently. I'll have to take that into account when I price my prints.

I brought up a similar questions in this forum

and found out that you can offer a listing for this but its against etsy rules to do so for shipping only. You have to offer to ship a empty box for upgrades.

Also etsy now has a shipping team again that offers upgrades, but not all customers will be able to see the upgrades:(

There is now a protype for shipping options, you should sign up for that instead.

I tried a while ago but it is reserved to US sellers.
