Using stock photo colors?

Not sure if that title makes sense...but my question is if I am making a scarf and offer it in all the colors a particular yarn company has to offer, am I able to post the pics of their available colors from their site? (As opposed to buying every color which I so cannot afford to do).

Re: Using stock photo colors?

I think what you're asking is, if you post a listing for a scarf, and their color chart, can you do that?

I would think so, just make sure you put on there that it's an XXX days production time.

Yes, I think just make it quite clear that it's a custom item and that they can choose which colour they want. Why not list the colours in the description and provide a link to the company's site so people can see the colours there?

Can't put an outside link to a place you can buy items, and I'm almost betting a yarn link would have yarn for sale on it.

Re: Using stock photo colors?

Yes...I want to post a color chart of all their available colors but wasn't sure if that would be crossing any copyright territory since it's their photos, not mine.

I think it's fine that you post a color chart on your listing since I saw plenty of sellers did the same thing while they are selling same item in lots of different colors.

Re: Using stock photo colors?

Now that, is interesting, I'd say yes, but I'd also say email them, they might not care. I'd make sure they're OK with you using their color chart on a listing is all. It's still their IP. And still their more than like copyrighted pictures.

If you know 100% that an outside link won't lead to their page and showing their online store or something, you should be fine, but I'd ask, sometimes these kind of companies are surprisingly lenient on things like this, they know crafters and they understand places like Etsy.

Re: Using stock photo colors?

Maybe you could contact the yarn company's customer service department and ask if it's permissible. Be sure to tell them that your listing will specify that the item was made with their brand. Good luck!

Re: Using stock photo colors?

Great idea...I will see about contacting them. I really think having a pic of all the colors is a good idea, I have seen other sellers post colorway pics, but I had a hard time telling if it was their personal photos or from a companies (judging by some they look like companies since they are close ups and not pics of entire skeins.)
It would just be so much more convenient (dollar wise) to purchase a color as I complete the project for a customer, rather than what I was originally going to do was knit a scarf in every color. But this particular yarn is over 20 bucks a skein!

Re: Using stock photo colors?

Jaie - thanks wasn't aware of that, it's just never crossed my mind.

Or you could just put small squares of the available colours down one side of the sample picture?

Re: Using stock photo colors?

I'm not sure about permissions issues, however I think if you are using their color chart because you will be using their specific yarn it would be okay.

If, for example, you were putting a company specific color chart up but then planning to find cheaper quality yarn that sort of matched their colors that would be deceiving.

I would suggest contacting the company for permission. :)

Re: Using stock photo colors?

I made my "own" color chart since none of the companies I use actually had one made up! I post it as the last pic of my items. Its definitely helps customers know what colors are available.
