Does anyone know; is a message automatically sent to the seller when you post their item in a treasury, or do you have to send one?

You have to send one yourself. Granted, it does show up in their activity feed so you don't need to send a message unless you want one.

You can use and app called treasurybox. It is very helpful but it works only with Google Chrome as browser.

A message is definitely not sent automatically. I usually take a few minutes to send a note to each person whose item I've featured. Doesn't take long and it's a little more personal than the Activity mention. But they do get a notice in their Activity, so the note really is optional.
