Showcases...where do your items 'go?'

This may seem like a silly question...

I was looking at the showcase information and found it interesting. I've also heard a lot of talk about showcases, but honestly there's something I'm still missing here. I mean, where do your items go to? What/where IS the showcase? Please elaborate if you know, thanks! :)

You see showcased items if you're shopping by category. So if you go to the Etsy front page and click on the art category, you'll see the showcased items in art at the top of the page. Part of why I think doing showcases is a bust (other than personal experience in getting very few views that way) is that most people don't seem to shop that way. If they're looking for x, they type in x on the search bar, which shows search ads at the top.

When you click on one of the categories on the Etsy home page (ie, jewelry, childrens, books and zines, etc.), at the top of the page is a sponsored section of about 20 items. This is the showcase. I typically get about 100% more views when I purchase a showcase, and I've gotten a few sales from them as well. They cost $7, so I usually only do one every month or so. They work better than the ads, I think. Once you purchase a showcase, you can line up the item/items you want to place in the slot.

Showcase did not work for me. Maybe someone else has had a more positive experience with it. I do not plan on doing it again.

I think maybe it's good for children's stuff. That showcase fills up all 20 slots three weeks in advance as soon as it hits midnight. I've always done pretty well with them.
