Is it just me or is this against the rules of Etsy? I was working on a treasury and noticed a familiar picture. Behold I seen it from another shop. I was just curious how this works or if this okay. Thanks! Sorry if this is in the wrong place.
The problem is, it's not in any way at all from China. The shop I purchased the "original" bracelet from is from the US, who is selling it for a huge percentage of money compared to the resellers, which makes that shop even a worse reseller?
This is a clear example of a picture being worth a thousand words! Each shop owner in this treasury should be shipped to China for a long, sweatshop intensive vacation!
hahaha yes! I see a ton of stuff on there I have seen in shops! Great to know I could start a jewelry shop on etsy and sell things that cost me a penny each for $15. I feel so bad for jewelry sellers, I feel like that must be the hardest hit with the reseller shops and I know a ton of shops that really do handmake everything themselves, how to compete!?
Jennifer, I don't think it was a BNR. I think most comments are sarcastic and the curator wanted us to see with our own eyes the reselling problem on Etsy. I actually had no clue there were resellers here until all that happened this past week.
It's not just in jewelry, sadly. It's creeping into and taking over hair accessories too. People buy pre-made flowers and bows, attach a clip, and viola! it's handmade. The sad part is that I think this falls under "assembled" which IS allowed. Sellers like me can't compete with that, but by golly we're still going to try!
You have to remember that China will duplicate anything and will sell it for much less then the original creator. I'm not saying that that is the situation here but it is best to be cautious.
Rozena - Just make sure that the shop owner is not the one being copied. It happens many times. Many artists and crafters are copied, that is a big reason that at art and craft shows that pictures are a big no-no.
Regina - that's so true! The amount of copying I hear about, even from people still handmaking is frightening! The last craft fair I went to my work got slyly photographed and they took about 3 varying business cards, I couldn't say anything too them however as I was in the middle of a sale and my stall was crammed! I would normally pull someone up on it, just a polite question as to what they're taking a photo of and why (in case they're students or media)...
I can't help but anxiously wait and hope I don't see any replicas, especially since it's one of my original illustrations on top of my original design.
I have moved some things from my first shop to my new shop using the same pictures, but certainly don't sell it in both..This treasury is unbelievable!
Regina, I agree. I really hope that is the case rather than both shops being resellers. Even though that would still stink if the reseller shop did copy most of this orther shops inventory at least they themselves wouldn't be doing anything wrong. That's insane that people would do something like that!
I just noticed the link no longer works for that fabulous treasury... I just had to add that I saw one of those style of bracelets on a co-worker today who happens to be from China... I meant to ask her what she paid for hers...she's big on Prada fashion... I wonder if they have their version too...
Yeah, I definitely spent a whole night and the subsequent morning trying to report reseller shops with the same items for like $1.99. What baffled me is that many of them had THOUSANDS of sales! I mean, come on people! This is Etsy, not eBay. It's so disheartening for those of us who actually make what we sell, especially for me as a jewelry seller, which is already a saturated market enough. UGH.
If it's the same person, I'd assume it's fine. Like in my case. :) I have two shops - this one is my newborn photo prop and children's boutique, and my other one is more a miscellani of crafting supplies, sewing patterns, a little vintage, doll clothes, jewelry, and other handmade gifts. I sell my PDF patterns in both shops, and sell a few of my baby hats in the other one too.
