Renewing Listing VS. Item Quantity

Am I better off leaving my item quantity at 1 and renewing that listing as its sold or just increasing the quantity available?

(Example: I have 10 bars of homemade soap to sell. Should I make a listing for 1 bar of soap and renew it when it is sold until all 10 bars are sold, OR should I just list the quantity as 10 available?)

If I remember in the past it seems in the long run I was charged less by Etsy when I renewed ads.

Re: Renewing Listing VS. Item Quantity

I am curious about this, too! I usually list 1 item then renew it. It seems that renewing a listing may make it more visible more often? Any other opinions out there?

Re: Renewing Listing VS. Item Quantity

I dont know about exposure (I hadnt thought of that!!) but I do believe I was charged less when I renewed ads in the past verses just upping the quantity available. Of course this meant I had to stay on top of renewing when something sold.

Re: Renewing Listing VS. Item Quantity

For me, I would like to do the listing for just 1. If I get an order for more than one of the same item, then I edit the listing to make it for more. Since my sales are less, I think, that is cost effective for me. For people with more sales, it can be time consuming to edit the listing each time an order comes.
for shops like mine with lower income, I guess, renewing is cost effective.

Re: Renewing Listing VS. Item Quantity

I would only add one additional quantity to the item listing (if you don't want to have to worry about renewing it timely). I still think there is a random benefit to renewing. It can make your item show up sooner on a search list, but it doesn't always. Not sure if that makes sense, but that's what I notice. So given that there is a small shot that renewing still may help you some, you may want to save your 20 cents until you need to renew.

Re: Renewing Listing VS. Item Quantity

I think it depends on how many items you sell of the same time on one order. For example, I sell Christmas stockings and from October through December I up the quantity I have so that people can order multiple items without convoing me for a special listing. During the rest of the year, I leave it at 1 because I'm not selling that many and I just renew when I have a sale. But if you normally only sell one item at a time, then I would leave it at one and renew when sold. If you normally sell two or three bars of the same soap at a time, then I might up it to 3. I think it has more to do with what you sell than an overall right or wrong way.

Re: Renewing Listing VS. Item Quantity

I considered the same thing for some prints of a painting I did. I think it would probably be better to list one at a time, I think the cost would be the same, however, you would get more exposure on your item renewing it as your item would be more recent on the listings.

Also, say you post the quanity for 10, then but don't sell all 10 before the listing expires. Then you've wasted what you've spent listening all 10, cause you would still get charged 20 per listing.. quanity 10, so 2 dollars

Re: Renewing Listing VS. Item Quantity

Just put a note in your listing along with a link to convo you if they'd like more than one.

Re: Renewing Listing VS. Item Quantity

I just looked at your shop.... I would list each item as 1 and then you would also have more to fill the shop. I have found manageable sizes of 1 or a set of 2 seem to be better, but if you have several listings, someone can add more. Early on I had confused people ask too often when I listed 2 or more of an item in quantity available. They didn't understand the price was only for 1 of those at a time, or essentially thought the price was for all as a group. So I just started listing multiple times for each and renewing as needed.

Sometimes I now add a note to convo about others or to suggest looking in other categories of my shop for multiple or complimentary pieces. Customers who are really interested will find or ask.
