Question for PDF Pattern Sellers!

(and for anyone who may want to chime in! :) Reposting here to get everyone!

What do you think of my PDF pattern prices? I've been looking around at lots of others selling similar things, and they're selling theirs at $4/$4.50 and up to $5 or $6 for larger items/outfits. Should I raise my prices, or is this a rather open-ended question???

I'd appreciate any input!!!

Re: Question for PDF Pattern Sellers!

I purchase 99% of my patterns from Etsy sellers. I pay between $4.00-$6.00 for those patterns. What decides for me if I will purchase a pattern is not so much price but:
1. Uniqueness of pattern
2. Clarity of supplies needed to complete the pattern in the listing description
3. It must be spelled out in the listing if you allow items to be sold that are made from your items. I wont purchase any patterns that wont allow or insist you purchase a cottage license. I dont have time to go searching your intro or policy pages or take time to contact you. I will move on.
4. Also, I'll buy more patterns if you offer multi purchase disounts.
5. Also tell me if and how many pictures are provided in your pdf. Nothing worse than downloading a pattern to find out there is no picture with it.

So raise your prices if you want because they aren't out of line with most pattern writers.

Re: Question for PDF Pattern Sellers!

I'd raise them, I sell my patterns in my other shop for $5 and they sell pretty well

Re: Question for PDF Pattern Sellers!

I agree with natasha too

with one exception, unless the pattern has artwork on it, you cannot legally keep someone from selling the finished item.

Re: Question for PDF Pattern Sellers!

Natasha, thank you so much! I'm already trying to make sure I cover all the points you mentioned, but they were a good reminder. I always include the list of supplies, mention that you may freely sell finished items from my patterns, offer multi-purchase discounts (though I'm working on putting together pattern packages), but the mentioning how many pictures are included was something I'd never thought of before - I'm going to add that into all my listings. Thank you!

Re: Question for PDF Pattern Sellers!

Steph, none of my patterns have artwork on them, if I'm understanding you correctly, so there's no problem there.

Re: Question for PDF Pattern Sellers!

I thought that you can sell both/either a license to make up the pattern for individual use (or gifts in small qty), or a license to make & sell larger qty.

Wish I knew a lawyer who really understands copyright law.
