Question about tags...

Hi everyone,

I have a couple of questions about catagories, titles, and tags.

I am going to use this item as an example:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/123820592/brown-clutch-wallet-bag

If I have this item listed under the crochet catagory, for search purposes is it important for me to have "crochet" as a tag, and in the title as well? If I have room I would put it anyways, but If I can think of other tags, I was wondering if it was an important tag still or not.

Hey, that's my question too. Rachael, I will be watching your post for some good Etsy advice too.

Re: Question about tags...

I would use the word as part of keyword phrases in your title and tags. It's not necessary to use it as a single word tag because you already have it in the Crochet category.

Crochet wallet
Crochet clutch
Brown crochet bag

Re: Question about tags...

I remember reading somewhere that we didn't need to put "crochet" in the title if it is already listed in that category or was I misinformed?

Re: Question about tags...

It helps with relevancy. You need to think like a buyer when creating titles and tags. Etsy gives you something like 140 characters in your title and 20 in your tags. You should try to include as many keyword phrases as you can in your title. Think like a buyer when creating keyword phrases. A good way to do this is to type your item in the search bar and see what phrases show up in the drop down. The ones near the top are the most popular. You should try to incorporate those into your titles and tags.

If I was a buyer looking for a crocheted bag I would type exactly those words into the search bar. If your title doesn't have the word crochet in it, you're item is going to be lost behind the hundreds of other items that do have the word in the title. You want to get as close to the first page of search results as you possibly can. Not every buyer uses categories to look for an item.

Re: Question about tags...

If I have it in the title I don't feel I have to put it in tags, but do repeat the category,
I could be wrong but I think the title and tags both get it found in online searches, google etc., and
The category gets it grouped with like items on Etsy so it would help searches there.
I switch it up if I am not getting any hits on the item.

Re: Question about tags...

The category that you select (Crochet) actually does become one of your tags. So there's no need to repeat that tag again.

Is it a clutch or a wallet? There is quite a bit of a difference.

When listing an item I've found that its best to say what the item IS rather than what it can be used for, especially in the tags.

You can add tags such as
brown clutch (if its a clutch)
button closure
crocheted clutch

Re: Question about tags...

Thanx everyone, I don't really consider it a wallet or a clutch, more of a pouch, but someone else told me that no one would probably search pouch, and to use words like wallet and clutch that people would search for

Re: Question about tags...

You need to repeat the keywords in your title and tags for Etsy. Repeat the keywords in your title and description for Google. This ends up with the keywords repeated in three places in order to cover Etsy and search engines like Google.

Re: Question about tags...

I think it's less important to repeat if your main concern is Etsy relevancy and you have other priority tags. I sell vintage clothes so when I'm testing my relevancy and type in "vintage hat" in the search bar, etsy automatically takes out the "vintage" and shows me "hats" in vintage. But if you're trying to compete on Google I think it's an important inclusion. Disclaimer: This is based on personal SEO research I've been doing but I'm a total novice and dummy. Feel free to correct me.
