Promoting through twitter

Hi everyone! I just created a twitter account recently and it seems to be generating lots of views when I tweet an item. I was wondering if anyone has any success stories or other twitter tips. I don't have a ton of followers but it seems the more people I follow, the more followers I get. Like I said I'm new to the whole thing and have only been using it regularly for the last few days. Using craftcult.com I monitored how much traffic an item was getting after posting on twitter. One that hadn't had barely any views since Christmas had increased by 21 views in less than one minute. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Aubree

Re: Promoting through twitter

I don't feel like I necessarily know how to use Twitter effectively, but I'm hoping someone else will have some great advice! I also have tons more views after tweeting about a new item--I don't know if any sales have come directly from twitter, but i at least like having a decent amount of views on my items :-) I'm following you now!

Re: Promoting through twitter

Thanks maybematilda, following you as well! I have been having a hard time getting views on my items, but the good thing about views (even if there aren't any sales directly from twitter) is that the more a website is visited, the more it is recognized by google and other search engines. The more popular a site is the further up the search list it is. So the more views your item gets, that means more traffic on your site and more recognition from search engines. So at least we're getting that much out of twitter lol...

Re: Promoting through twitter

I don't really know how to use twitter effectively but I do have fun with it :) mine is http://twitter.com/avisiontorememb

I have heard (but that doesn't mean its correct) is that those first few hits don't really count because there are robots out there going through all the links so it really isn't a person that is interested in looking at your link. I know it can be an effective tool but I don't know how to utilize it as such. I hope someone is more helpful!

I just followed all three of you.

I'm not totally up with all Twitter does, but like everyone here has noticed, you get lots of views from tweeting your new listings. I have also included my sales, treasuries, and older listings in my tweets and it really seems to bring more views. One thing that I have recently learned to do is to use "hash tags." This gets your tweets on more lists and ultimately to more viewers. There seems to be a lot of things involved with hash tags, but the simple way to explain it is...
in each tweet, you add key words with a # hash mark before it...

example:

Garnet wire wrapped bracelet http://www.whatever
#etsy #jewelry #gemstone #teamxyz

these hash tags, put this tweet on the etsy list, the jewelry list, the gemstone list, the teamxyz list...after you tweet it, if you click on the hash tag, it will bring you to that list. This makes it easier for people looking for a particular item.

I googled "hash tags" to learn about them, so you should be able to find more info about them if you like. Hope this helps :)

Re: Promoting through twitter

I have been using Twitter for sometime and successfully used it to promote my items on Folksy and also my blog. Would really like to learn how to promote both my jewellery and Etsy teams and get a wider following. If anyone can give me some types on using tags specifically for this that would be great! You can find me here: http://twitter.com/uniquebeadedgem. Will go back through all your postings and follow you all, that will get me started. Thanks for your help.

Re: Promoting through twitter

I've started up with twitter recently myself. I haven't noticed a great effect yet, but then I think I need a lot more followers. I try to tweet about a range of things - just posting links will probably tire people of your feed (at least I find that with others who do it too much), so I post links to new shop listings, treasuries and my blog some of the time, and I tweet about other vaguely related daily activities as well.

The hashtags are useful, I use the #etsy, #sewing and #costume tags and it does seem to help attract a few new followers.

My twitter account is @chaelendesigns. I appreciate any follows. Thanks!

Re: Promoting through twitter

I know I have gotten at least 2 sales directly from twitter over the last 6 mos or so. The key is to widen your scope to include a variety of people, because each person who follows you has a network of people who could be your potential followers. Also, it's great to use Etsy team hashtags because often your team members will re-tweet you to new groups of people.

Re: Promoting through twitter

Hey All, I recently started with twitter as well, and was just using it to promote my items. But, then I came across this discussion which I found to be really interesting: http://www.etsy.com/teams/7722/business-topics/discuss/6595303/

Long story short, "successful" twitter users say you shouldn't promote your items, just try to build your network among other crafters and individuals you admire and the sales will follow.

Personally, I have a hard time coming up with enough "interesting" stuff to twitter about that's not sales related, but it's still an interesting read/thought.

Re: Promoting through twitter

I think Twitter does bring views and I am not very savvy at it. I also heard that the first few views were "false" as they are from automated twitter robots. Whatever those are!

I am going to go back and add you all to my twitter follow list.

Re: Promoting through twitter

I've been on twitter for quite awhile now and I love it! It's a little different for me because I sell supplies. I use my twitter more socially than to sell. I chat, link my blog posts, giveaways etc. on there! I don't follow people who only link their items for sale! I like to have some "social interaction"!
I have had several sales from twitter which is a bonus to me!
