Print sizes

I've asked this in a 'prints' team but nobody has been able to help me.

I've just started selling prints and it has opened up a whole new world of paper sizes. As a UK based graphic designer I am used to all the UK sizes (A3, A4, A5, etc) but obviously as Etsy has a massive US base I want to offer US sizes too.

My main question is, what do you think is the best way to offer different sizes of the same print? I'm afraid my shop will look a bit saturated if I have a different listing for every size so wondered if anyone had an ingenious way of doing it?

....still on the learning curve!

Thank you very much,

Eilidh

Re: Print sizes

Eilidh,

I personally don't think it matters to have both US and UK sizes available. In many sizes you're looking at half an inch or roughly 3 cm difference. This difference doesn't seem to interfere with your lovely prints. Plus in the US photo print sizes and printer paper sizes differ. (i.e. 8x10 inches is the standard for a photograph and the ream of letter paper you get is 8.5 x 11 inches)

That being said-
The comparable size to an A4 sheet in the US is the letter size. The A4 is slightly longer.

A4=8.26 x 11.69 inches (210 x 297 mm)
Letter= 8.5 x 11 inches (215.9 x 279.4 mm)

Some stores like Ikea only sell their frames in metric sizes. You might simply mention places to get metric frames in the US in our descriptions, or list a comparable size with the US vocabulary.

A4 comprable to US Letter
A3 comparable to US Tabloid

Hope this helps.

Re: Print sizes

Hi eilidh
One of my favorite photography stores has this in his listing.

"Size to be chosen by buyer. Else price here reflects 13 x 18cm. All sizes are in standard European format, however we have provided the conversion in inches, and find that the European standard is not too far off the American one anyway :)

Currently, we offer:

Rectangles:
10 x 15 cm (3.93 x 5.90 inches) - €10
13 x 18 cm (5.11 x 7.08 inches) - €15
20 x 30 cm (7.87 x 11.81 inches) - €25
30 x 45 cm (11.81 x 17.71 inches) - €75
50 x 70 cm (19.68 x 27.55 inches) - €150

Squares:
13 x 13 cm (5.11 x 5.11 inches) - €12
20 x 20 cm (7.87 x 7.87 inches) - €21
30 x 30 cm (11.81 x 11.81 inches) - €65
50 x 50 cm (19.68 x 19.68 inches) - €110"

I don't know if this help you or not, but i do know that when i saw it it didn't turn me off, I haven't bought from this store yet but do plan to do so this summer after we get our living room painted

Re: Print sizes

Most shops I see tend to sell them in two sizes, but to be honest the best way you can do it, without wanting to relist every picture seven times for different sizes, is to simply make one listing for each picture, and price it at the middle size, stating so in the title.

If you sold A6, A5 and A4, then list it for the A5 price, and state in the title and description that other sizes are available. In the description you could go into detail and give the USD and GBP for each size (personally I would prefer it that way since I don't like to waste people's time by enquiring only to not buy because the price is too steep) to save potential buyers time, and if they're interested then you can create a new listing specifically for them with the new price.

As as for UK sizes, I live in the UK but I only ever see things sized in inches regardless of their location. I think most people would shop by specifics so you might be better off putting those sizes in as primary specifications, then adding the paper equivelant.

Hope this helps!

Re: Print sizes

Thank you ladies - that's really helpful! I guess it makes sense to have one listing and then have a small table with different sizes and their equivalents.

Thank you!! :)

Re: Print sizes

Eilidh, actually I have separate listings for each size in my shop, and I don't think it looks too saturated.... :)

If you have enough designs, you can rearrange your shop so that duplicate designs are spread out across your pages.

Also you can vary the first photos in each listing to avoid "sameness"....

For example, with this listing:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/90479243/ballerina-childrensbaby-art-print

• Small prints could use just the image (unframed) for the 1st photo.
• Medium prints could use a cropped close up of the monster, for the 1st photo.
• Large prints could use the framed image on the wall, for the 1st photo.

Also, my shop categories are divided into small, medium, and large prints, to (hopefully) make particular sizes easier to find.

In my listing descriptions, I use both inches and metrics to measure my prints, although I print them in US standard sizes 5"x7", 8"x10", 11"x14" etc...

A lot of sellers list 8"x8" and 5"x5" prints, and are very successful with selling them.... but I've personally had difficulty finding ready-made square frames where I live.
I recently went to 3 art supply stores, and only found 2 brands of square frames among the gazillions of rectangular frames. :/

4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 10x13, 11x14, 16x20 seems to be the standard in US frames... unless you buy frames custom made.

Outside the US, however, square frames/prints seem to be really popular. LOL :P
