Pinterest

I've seen a number of references to Pinterest recently, but don't really understand what it is and how it can help promote our shops.

Can anybody explain it to me and how it can be used to aid promotion?

Re: Pinterest

I'm not sure if I can really help at all. I recently joined Pinterest. It is alot like facebook but with photos. You have followers and you follow others as well. When I run across a photo I like I repin it to one of my boards. You create boards and have board titles. Which they are broken into catagories. Home Decor, Memoris, Fall Decor, etc. You decide on the titles.
I use Pinterest with my Face Book. When I add a new listing I pin it then I send it to my personal FB because my fan page is linked to Etsy.
I don't know if it will create sales or not. I thought why not? It's free, the photos are amazing. Plus it is another venue to get my Etsy shop name at in the public eye. Some of my items I pinned have already been repinned.
Hope this helps a little.

Re: Pinterest

Yep the whole point of it is to pin things you like or want to bookmark to come back to and share them with the world. I pin some of my listings on there and have some great friends that repin them and this lets things start to spread to their friends and beyond. Users can also scroll through recent pins that are not from any of their friends or search for something specific that was posted by anyone on pinterest. If pinned correctly a random person on pinterest may come across one of your items, think its cute, click through to your etsy shop, BUY! I think it can lead to sales. Pinterest is really hot right now and a great go to place for DIYers for ideas and inspiration.

Re: Pinterest

Its another way of getting out your links for the search machines, and more-so now because of what dear google will be doing soon. It is fun and addicting. I know that a lot of folks don't like the prices on the photos as it takes it away from their purposes for the photo. So when you add that pic you can take off the dollar amount. I leave a few on, but mostly delete the price.

Re: Pinterest

Thanks Barbara. I've just signed up for an account. Still don't really know how it works, but will have a go and see what happens.

I agree I don't like seeing the price either. I will have to investigate how to take that off.

I've started with a collection of colour inspiration photos, which will actually be really useful when making my glass lampwork beads. Looks like even if it doesn't generate any more sales it will help my creative process.

Re: Pinterest

Pinterest is a great way to bookmark projects you'll never complete and things you'll never buy.

At least, that's what other pinners tell me..

Re: Pinterest

You have a square icon on your browser bar above and anytime you see something online you just click that and then it sends the pic to pinterest board for you.

Re: Pinterest

I just started a pinterest account yesterday. I did a personal account and then did a board specifically for my Etsy store. Not sure if it makes any difference to do a business account vs. a personal account. Since I'm not on facebook anymore it's a little harder for me to find people that I know to follow. Hopefully it generates some interest.

Re: Pinterest

I haven't gotten any sales from pinterest. But I have had a few views. It helps that Etsy has a "pin it" button on every item so it automatically creates a description and link for you. I sometimes pin my own items, but I'm more looking for new recipes, work out routines, and ideas for a future home! I have a board for my items and I like when people like and repin them.

***You take the price of by just deleting it from the description. the "$" makes the little price banner appear.

Re: Pinterest

I've been on pinterest for months and use it practically every day. It only takes a few moments to view the photos that others have pinned for which you are "following".

It's important, like any other form of social media, to not focus on just your own items. I have 45+ boards and use them to pin the items I like, items that may provide me inspiration and as well my own designs.

I'm always curious about who pins my designs and what other items they find interesting so often times I'll view their boards and then start following them.

I always remove the price because it is a distraction and people may change their prices.

I'm just waiting for one of my designs to get pinned/viewed by a stylist to the stars and possibly get a sale ;-) I can always hope...

Re: Pinterest

I have to say I'm anti-pinterest. A lot of artists I know (mainly 2D artists/designers) would prefer our work not be pinned as many non-business owners post many Etsy items to DIY boards with the intent of copying the item.

Just be cognizant of what you're pinning and who your audience is. Sometimes pinning others work might be doing them a disservice.

Re: Pinterest

Brittany, as a painter I'm actually on the opposite side of that. Now, I watermark all my images in my Etsy shop and my online website, so that helps. When someone pins one of my paintings, the painting goes out and so does my name and business whether it's pinned from here or elsewhere. It's almost like a virtual business card.

The thing about art is that you're not just selling your painting, you're selling you. You are the brand. So, even if someone does copy it - it's still not done by you, which is how you have to approach selling art. I did just switch to my artworks coming with a certificate of authenticity, because there has been some confusion as my business has grown. But in general, Pinterest only helps get my name out there.

I would think the same could be done with any product here on Etsy, make sure to mark your images with your logo, and then consider it free advertising? Because really, if the person is going to create a copy for themselves they never were going to buy it anyway.

Re: Pinterest

I really enjoy pinterest, but please don't join up and just use it as a marketing tool. Attitudes like that will ruin pinterest.

Re: Pinterest

You need to make sure that OTHERS are pinning your items. Unless the rules have changed (which is possible), you are not allowed to pin your own items. And as far as the prices on the pictures, I've heard some people like them and some people don't, I think it's all what you want to do.

Re: Pinterest

Pinterest is like the Treasury on crack. I love pinterest - it's not so much like Facebook - there's not a lot of interaction, at least not on my boards. It's like a gigantic corkboard filled with inspiration, quotes, and just plain awesomeness. I don't have room for that many tearsheets, but this is such a neat way to find cool stuff and organize my ideas. I love pinterest.

Did I mention that I love Pinterest?

Just checkin'. :D

Re: Pinterest

I'm 99% sure there aren't any rules that prevent you from pinning your own items (I double checked on their web site FAQ). I pin a lot of my own things - it's kind of the point! The trick is to get other people to follow you and re-pin them... otherwise it's pretty useless to have your own things pinned.

I have a couple of tutorials on my blog for how to get started with pinterest, from the very beginning, that might be helpful for people just getting started. I've gotten lots of views on my etsy shop (some have resulted in sales) originating from my pinterest board and pins...

Re: Pinterest

I originally started a Pinterest account to promote my Etsy shop, but since then it has really just become a fun place for inspiration and ideas. I do get a few views from it, but I don't make that my sole goal anymore cause it can be discouraging. It is easy to just press the pin button though when I list a new item, so might as well get the extra exposure!

What I have found that brings quite a bit more traffic to the shop is Wanelo!! I think because it is geared toward shoppers! I have a lot more saves on Wanelo than pins on Pinterest. I had actually not even heard of Wanelo till recently from this team......thank you Brittany!! :) So, if you haven't tried that you may want to.

Re: Pinterest

I haven't had any sales that I know of but I have received views.

Think about it..... You post your work or other Etsy Sellers, Your friends like it, they Pin it, Their friends Pin it, so on and so forth......Social Marketing. I know Pin, Share Twitter, Tumbl and Rebelmouse. In less than a month I've gone from MAYbe 25 views a day to over 100. Sales not so much but persistance works!
