Re: Photography question - dark backgrounds

Wow, those are beautiful!

Just a guess from my end, as I use white backgrounds, but it looks like you need to have lamps pointed in a certain direction to get the shadows, and they probably actually boost the color of the image a bit in the editing process.

And, definitely a tripod on a macro setting for the clearest possible image.

I believe you can achieve this look with a photo editing program after you take the photo playing with "saturation."

Re: Photography question - dark backgrounds

I will be honest, those pictures look nice, but they're not very helpful. I looked at all four and wasn't sure what it was they were trying to sell. This is only damaging in the end. You need to be able to see what's being sold from the picture without having to look at the title. How often do you search on Etsy and not look at pictures? Or, rather, how often do you search on Etsy and ignore the pictures that you can't make out that easily.

These photographs look lovely, and they do work for the occasional person, but 90% of the time it only damages sales. I had a few friends who jumped on the bandwagon a little while back and tried to take pictures like these, and they managed, but their views dropped and sales become nonexistant until they changed them back.

Of course this isn't me saying don't do them, it's just me saying that it may not work out. I used props in my pictures once and they didn't work out either.

Re: Photography question - dark backgrounds

From the looks of it, they might be taken in natural light next to a window. To get pictures that clear with a dark background they probably used a tripod set a timer on their camera and changed a the aperture speed of their camera. This is strictly guessing here. I have been reading a lot on how a camera works lately to get specific looks. I use the nikon learn & explore app on my iphone but here is the website http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Learn-And-Explore/index.page

Hope this helps!
