Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

which one is it. I think I should start out pricing low to get in the market and get people wanting my product and as I become popular and print myself then I can increase my prices. What do you think?

I am always hearing its better to price high. That way you don't make your items looks inexpensive.

That was my strategy.

I think it is good. At least, to my store!

Make sure you cover your own costs though, or you will end up with much less than what you started with :) good luck!

Don't underprice yourself. Take the time to work out a formula that you're comfortable with and that pays for costs and your time, and stick with it. Underpricing yourself only hurts you in the end, because you'll become a slave to yourself!

Re: Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

I actually had one customer send me a convo saying that she was shocked that the product was so well made because considering how "cheap" it was she was expecting junk. After that, I raised my prices.

Low prices say low quality. Most people actually make more sales when they raise their prices. :)

Re: Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

I agree with Amanda. If you charge a really low price, a lot of customers seem to question the quality of your products. I know its uncomfortable at first to charge a high price especially if you as a seller wouldn't be able to afford your own stuff. Maybe middle range and slowly start raising the taxes as you take into account profit, materials, overhead and labor.

Re: Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

Don't start out with prices that are too low.
Low prices are accociated with low quality.
Show your customers how much you value your work and they might value it that much too.

Re: Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

I agree with them who say that better is to increase than make lower prices. I'm new in Etsy and pricing is actual also for me.
And as I know that my items are good quality, I try not to make too low prices for them.
But of course it's not easy, cause for one that price is high, for another maybe it seems low..
So as Amanda said - Don't underprice yourself! :)
Wish you luck!

Low prices = low quality

Wish my competitors would figure this out too hahaha but alas they have not and continue to undersell themselves.

Re: Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

I try to keep my prices in the mid line. I had one item priced very low, and it sold within 2 days of being listed...then the customer asked if there was anything wrong with it, as the item was so low cost. That told me certain items need to be at the cost of what they are worth ie: a designer item should be priced at those prices, people will think they are damaged if not. I always struggle with the price point, I factor in worth point, my costs, and condition. each item has it's own value

Re: Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

I'm constantly struggling with price. It seems there are a lot of sellers of picture frames, CHEAP. My frames are upcycled, and there's a lot of work and time involved, sanding, re-staining, then actually making them unique. Nothing I do is cheap. But I see a lot of shops selling for a lot less than I do.

Re: Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

I understand jenni and agree but then I think about the quality of my work and considering that it is for a PDF file I think I shoull price low at first and them increase my prices as I offer the hard copy or my art print. Take a look at my store and tell me what you think.

Re: Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

This makes sense but I am still not sure about selling. I plant to sell my art print printed and packages for 10-12 but right now am new and learning and offer PDF files only. I think that maybe my items should be around 3 for file only or 4 and then as I switch to printing them then increase my prices. what do these price points say about my items? Take a look and let me know. Thanks for your advice.

I think you should price high so you can leave yourself wiggle room for sales.

Too low and your risk making your items look cheap.
Too expensive and you risk people scoffing at the prices and never returning.

Re: Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

I've raised some of my prices since I reopened in mid-October. I quickly realized that my prices were too low. When I search mini note cards mine are priced higher than some but right in line with most. It seriously drives me crazy that there are sellers who are giving their items away by charging $1.25 for a set of cards. They've priced their items so low that after covering supplies and fees there won't be anything left.

I haven't had any problem selling at my higher prices. Make sure you're at least charging for your supplies, labor and fees.

Re: Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

I priced right above the mid range which was the least I needed to price at to pay for supplies, to pay me for my time, and to make a minimum profit. Then as I began to sell more I raised my prices.

If possible try to save to buy supplies in bulk. It will slowly start to help your profit margin.

Re: Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

You need to price properly - for your market and for yourself. It is better to be a little high and offer a sale than to be too low.

If you price low you will attract the bargain hunters, those looking for the lowest price. Those customers are not loyal to the shop they are loyal to the wallet. If you raise your prices you will lose them as customers and in effect will be starting over again "getting your name out there"

Price properly and you attract customers who love your product and can become loyal to the shop becoming repeat customers and referring you to their friends. Then you can offer discounts or have sales without compromising your perceptive quality while building your reputation.

Re: Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

I opened my shop and through ignorance didn't price my items properly.
I've slowly increased them BUT I've also changed the designs (and materials used) stocked in my store.. so I have higher priced items now of better quality alongside some original designs at a higher price that when they were introduced. I think that helped me raise my prices without any issues.

Price your pieces fairly to begin with.

Re: Is it better to price low then increase your prices...

I definitely don't think you should price low, but make sure you don't overprice your items at first. Then, when you figure out what sells, raise the prices slightly on the higher demand items to increase your profit for your time spent.
