Photo props

It was recommended to me that I start using some kind of prop in my item pictures--something related to how the item would be used. I already do that with tea wallets: http://www.etsy.com/listing/79508785/tea-wallet-in-antique-white-and-copper?ga_search_query=tea%2Bwa...

Some items are obvious and I can figure out what to use as a prop in the photo. But the obvious ones, using human models to show things like hair clips, scarves, whatever else, is bugging me. I'm not terribly comfortable using a human model; I don't personally like to buy things that are "used"--I wouldn't buy a hat that had been on someone else's head, because I don't know how clean that person's head is! That's just one example. And I know I'm not the only one that feels this way, because I found a whole group of people online that talked about how gross it is to buy things on Etsy that've been worn because of questionable hygiene. I'm also not comfortable using the only available models--myself and my stepdaughter. Just not okay with putting pictures of either of us all over the place, kwim?

Would it be totally stupid to put my hair clips on a doll? Any other suggestions? Or should I just keep them as is? It's not like they're not selling at all, but if there's room for improvement I might as well take it.

Re: Photo props

What about a mannequin head with a wig? Styrofoam heads are cheep at beauty supply shops and after Halloween you should be able to find some cheep wigs.

Re: Photo props

I didn't think of using a Teddy Bear, either. Maybe I could make my own doll ;)

I didn't think of using a mannequin, either--I'll have to look into that once I get my funds caught back up!

Re: Photo props

I've been having the same delimma. Some people say use a person to get a sense of size, shape, etc as you mentioned. I've done that, but not happy with the results. Someone suggested using a cardboard cut out that resembles a neck for necklaces with a contrasting fabric. Not sure what to do for bracelets or earings since again the buyer probably wants to get a sense of length, size, etc. I'll probably try the cardboard cut out with fabric for the necklaces next since I'm looking for something that looks more sophisticated. I've been thinking about trying Babs Crump's suggestion of a mannequin with a wig for hair pieces. Just need to get one that isn't too creepy looking. ;-)

I'll be interested to see what other suggestions you get.

Good luck!

Re: Photo props

For your bags, why don't you hang them from a fencepost or a hook on a fence? It seems you are going for a theme with the grass, so a fence would go along with that. It would give a sense of how they hang.

Re: Photo props

It's never even crossed my mind that using a real model could consider the items to technically be "used!" Good to think about because I was considering using a person for my necklaces. lol

One other thought to throw in the mix is the angle you use for taking photos. I've seen some beautiful hair pieces that didn't show anyone's face. In fact, you couldn't tell if it was a real person or a mannequin...taken sort of "above and behind." Does that make sense?

Re: Photo props

I use a mannequin head for all my hair clips even though it seems all the top sellers in my category use live models. I think people don't realize that once a hair clip has been worn it's used- and, at least in my state, there are health laws prohibiting selling used hair items. I think alot of Etsy sellers don't ever research the laws in their area before opening shop.
I do use a live person for jewelry and made to order items though.

Re: Photo props

I use mannequins for my jewelry prop...thought about a live model but then I am afraid people won't want to buy something that has been worn by another person. Guess there are 2 sides to every dilemma with photography.

Re: Photo props

What would you use for cat toys? I have a bunch more like this to list tomorrow: http://www.etsy.com/listing/77691418/catnip-mouse-in-orchid?ga_search_query=cat%2Btoy&ga_search_type...

But no idea what to use as a prop. I don't have a cat, so I can't do the obvious...

Re: Photo props

Missy Corey, had an interesting point. I didn't realize, naive that I am ;-), that state health laws would be something to consider. Thank you for the bit of information.

Natalie Marshall ,interesting point about taking a picture above. Hats and hair pieces can be worn in a number of ways. I'll have to try that.

Casey, thank you for the fence post idea. Easier and more interesting to see the purse.

Re: Photo props

I would put the cat toy near a cat bed, or maybe make a mouse hole in a fake wall (made out of cardboard?) and have the little cat toy peeking out.

Also, the Value Village thrift stores near me always have bins of cheap ($2.99) mannequin heads at Halloween, and cheap wigs- if you have one near you they may sell the same.

Re: Photo props

Check out Ikea's AS-IS corner or even the local thrift store! I use plates, glasses and vases from Ikea and each piece cost me at most $2.

Re: Photo props

This debate about hair and jewelry worn on models vs mannequins is why I breathe a huge sigh of relief at my decision to sell art! ROFL

Personally, mannequins creep me out... I would much rather see clothing, jewelry, and hats on real people.
But obviously the state health laws are keen on protecting me from your germs, and forcing me to deal with creepy mannequins instead. ;) *sigh*

Another option that looks lovely is posing jewelry and hair clips on a jewelry box, scrap of silk, lace handkerchief, handwritten letter, or something equally soft and feminine.

Re: Photo props

I'm not disputing any state health laws but wouldn't retail stores have to post something like "Try on hats at your own risk?" People try on bathing suits for crying out loud! lol

We do live in litigious times though...

It's a good reminder that we all need to do our own research. Lovely to hear everyone's point of view. :)
