Photo editing software for Mac

Hi, can anyone recommend some photo editing software that works on a mac? I currently use iPhoto but it's a bit limited & has a bug that really bothers me!

I saw lots of people recommending GIMP but I downloaded it & can't get it to start up for some reason. Are there any others I should try?

I wouldn't mind paying for it if it weren't too expensive, I can't afford something like Photoshop sadly!

Thanks!

I'm struggling with iPhoto, too! I had CS5 on my PC but don't think I can transfer it from PC to Mac :/

Could you afford photo shop elements? I think that's less than $100! It's my fall back if I can't transfer mine.

Re: Photo editing software for Mac

You can get a free 30 day trial of photoshop. That might work for the meantime. Before my son kicked my Mac off a table and broke it (he's 2), I used iPhoto and it worked fine for what I needed to edit. I just brightened them a little. But, I do know what you're talking about with the bugs. Sometimes it would lag or not open correctly.

Good luck!

Re: Photo editing software for Mac

If it is just for very basic things online photo editors are great like picmonkey I find really good for just touching up and lightening pictures. Obviously if its more advanced use then you will need something with more options.

Yes, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Picmonkey and that's what I currently use to lighten my pictures, make banner, avatars, etc.

It's so fun! Don't know why I didn't think of that before.. thanks DorothyDays!

I use iphoto and then tweak in Photoshop. I know it's not a free option, but if you want to have something long term that has lots of options for editing, Photoshop is really the way to go and you can buy it by itself (vs. part of the suite). Plus you can use it to make your shop banner & avatar, graphics, etc. It's a good investment! :)

I use photoshop elements, it's by far the best BUT it will have a learning curve because it's not totally user friendly unless you know what you are doing then again there's a wealth of knowledge and tutorials on stuff on youtube so you can learn anything you need to. :) It's totally worth the money to me.

Thanks everyone!
I did try Picmonkey actually but didn't think it did much for then iPhoto and was tonnes slower. Maybe I should try the free trial of Photoshop & then get Photoshop Elements if I like it!

Pollyanna,

You can do some basic photo editing tasks with preview. You can crop, resize, and do some color correction, lightening, etc.

iPhoto seems more geared to family albums.

I use Aperture and it is doing a good job for me.

Re: Photo editing software for Mac

I use Photoshop Elements for removing color casts, otherwise I use iPhoto & have no problems with it...in fact, I love it to bits and get great pics with it. What problems are you having with it?

I try editing in iPhoto, then uploading to picmonkey to get extras...I really miss picnik though- that was great and easy to use!

Re: Photo editing software for Mac

All I ever use in iPhoto is color enhancement and straightening, and I haven't had any problems with it.
