Packaging help!

Hello all,

I've been working on my new packaging for personalized jewelry, going slowly. I had few questions and really appreciate your ideas and inputs. I used to pack all my jewelry orders first in a poly bag then would wrap it in a tissue paper and then it would go in a white organza bag. It was really time consuming for me. So I've started to use cotton filled boxes now. I liked craft boxes but wasn't sure about it. So got different color boxes from an etsy seller. What do you think, should I use craft box or colored ones?

The next question is, once I pack the jewelry in the box, I've been thinking about using my shop name stamped on a white circle tag. I'm also debating about to have custom made stamp or to use stickers. Though, I like the stamp best! And the last thing, should I use ribbon or colored hamp cord with the white stamped tag?

Sorry it's a very long post. But I've been thinking about these since long and couldn't decide. So thought to ask our very helpful team here! TIA,

Jignasa

Re: Packaging help!

I don't know about the jewelry business....but I do love it when I receive jewelry in a pretty packaging :)

I would put myself in buyers' shoes....how would you like to receive your package? Remember that how you handle orders is part of your branding too. Then, how is your shipping cost? As customers pay for it, can you cut down on the cost while keeping the wrapping pleasant? Some customers prefer some thought put into packaging and low shipping cost to fancy things which will cost them more.

Absolutely Minerva! I too, love receiving gifts in pretty packaging.
I'm trying to make the new packaging affordable and customer can get it at the same rate I'm offering now.

Thank you for your time, really appreciate it!

Re: Packaging help!

I totally agree with Minerva!
To me, packaging is really important when I receive any item I buy. That's why I say go for pretty colored boxes perhaps with simple patterns rather than use kraft boxes. They're boring and not so appealing :)

Re: Packaging help!

I wrap my packages in a newspaper paper that I stamped with thank you stamps in different color ink, you could do something like that, or find a pretty wrapping paper and some ribbon, the extra effort could mean alot to your customers, if you wanna see how i wrap stuff up, the last photos in my items have what the packaging looks like
you can see in these earrings I made.

Re: Packaging help!

Craft boxes with beautiful ribbons / bows would work too....they would probably be more economical for you too.

Re: Packaging help!

I would make sure that what you choose is cost effective so you don't have to build too much into your shipping price and you don't lose money. I never really paid much attention to the packaging when I purchase unless it is really poorly done. So a lovely tie (even colored raffia would work for me) on the colored box would be great. The sticker seems a little more professional than the stamp but might not make a difference in the end.

Re: Packaging help!

Stamps are hard to use. I tried a stamp on kraft boxes and if the ink didn't transfer well that was a wasted box. Go with stickers.

Re: Packaging help!

I agree with Lori - I tried stamping on my kraft boxes, but it didn't transfer entirely because a lot of kraft boxes don't have a completely smooth top (they're a little bumpy).

I personally use a kraft box with colored twine & stickers - you can sort see it in the last photo slot I have in my listings (or on my instagram here: http://instagram.com/honey.thistle)

The reason I chose a kraft box is because a lot of my jewelry is nature related and very colourful, and I thought it would fit my brand the best. Having looked at your jewelry, I definitely think you'd probably want to use ribbons and maybe a clean colored box (such as silver, gold, etc.) since your jewelry is more chic if that makes sense.

Re: Packaging help!

I think stamps would be time consuming and for me they don't always turn out the way I would have liked them to. I would go with craft boxes raffia and stickers :)

Re: Packaging help!

Hi,

I have lots of jewelry designers who use Organza bags, some buy cotton bags and then get their logos stamped on the bags and my bags are perfect for stamping. Some designers use dupioni silk bags for a rich look. All my products are great in quality.

Re: Packaging help!

Hi Jignasa, I too use the cotton filled boxes for my jewelry because I think it adds a little more protection during shipping and like the others have said we like opening gifts! I also had custom labels created by an Etsy seller to further brand my shop!. But again, you still want to keep it cost effective for you.

Re: Packaging help!

There have been some great Etsy tutorials on packaging your products. I watched the videos and was very impressed at the unique ways they wrapped things up with recycled and reusable materials. Definitely worth checking out! In the question of stamps verse stickers, I would go with stickers. I used to use stamps but they don't always come out clearly, so I switched to stickers. I found this article quite helpful:

Re: Packaging help!

I really love a beautiful package. Even if I like the item, if the packaging hasn't something different or personal, I feel a little disapointed.
So I think Stamps are better, because they feel more personal, and handmade.

Re: Packaging help!

I love getting beautiful package, that's why I don't mind the extra time (and money) it takes for wrapping items I sell.

Think about the colours that represent your brand. Is it white or some other colour? Stick with it because it's part of your branding. I would use ribbon and stickers, but stamps would be nice too. Do you add handwritten note? I hate it when there's no note from the shop. Adds a bit more personal touch.

Re: Packaging help!

I love to receive a nice package. I'm a crazy gift wrapper and I'm always desapointed when I got a gift not wrapped!

For my business, I use a classical brown box because it's remind nature (my jewels are made with recycled fur) but I ad to it colorful ribbons or ornamented ribbons depending of the occasion ! I keep it simple and elegant as my jewels.

Re: Packaging help!

Thank you very much everyone for your reply. I'm sorry for posting a very late rsponse.

Everyone has made some valid point. Finally, I've decided to go with recycled color box and will use some ribbon on it. I'm still debating on the box color - sea foam or navy blue? My jewelry pieces are silver and gold so not sure if one of those colors will look good. But I don't want to use silver or gold colored boxes. Besides, I may add Men's Jewelry in near future. So thought to choose these colors.

Any suggestions from these two colors? I don't have my logo or any custom labels or stickers. Eventually I'm planning to do that. So far I've my business cards which I can use on box top may be?

Please feel free to give any sugestions, ideas.

Thank you so much again!!

Re: Packaging help!

How about offering it as a variation with a price difference:
-basic kraft box (free)
-colored box with gift tag (+$x.xx)

Re: Packaging help!

If you're debating between seafoam green and navy blue, I'd go with the navy - especially if you're going to introduce men's jewelry at some point. The deep color will work easily for both men and women. You could use a simple raffle tie for the men - and for the women, use the raffia to see nature-inspired, or pretty colorful ribbons (or gold or silver) to feel more luxe.

Re: Packaging help!

That's a good idea Erica, thank you! I'll stock up on some craft boxes then :)

Thank you Jen! Love the navy blue too! Just found some decorative leaf ribbons in silver & gold and was thinking it'll look better on blue :)

Re: Packaging help!

I sell jewelry as well. Here are two good resources for you for boxes and stickers; Store Supply Guy.com sells Kraft boxes and foil ones, very inexpensive and fast shipping. On Ebay, or on her own website, NiftyLabels.com sells really pretty personalized stickers and the owner is lovely to work with. People love a pretty package!
