Packaging That Packs A Punch Article: Call for Responses!

Jump to solution
Hi sellers,

It's already August and pretty soon we'll be ramping up to the holiday season. A simple way to make a statement to buyers and to bring them back in the future is to wow them with your packaging. We're working on an article designed to get your packaging creative juices flowing and we'd love your help. Feel free to share your packaging tips and advice, and photos of your packaging (holiday focused or not!).

You can share a link to your listing where you feature your packaging, or you can share your photos here:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/etsypackaging

As with all of our community sourced articles, we'll quote our favorite tips and advice and will share our favorite packaging photos. We'll also be sure to link back to your shop in the process.

Thanks!

Love what I'm reading so far. For those of you who do include a photo of your pretty packing, I must say say, so smart. Part of what is special about ordering on Etsy is the packaging! As a buyer it's not something that's necessarily top of mind when purchasing, but come holiday time, or when you're purchasing a gift, or if it's a gift for yourself, it has such an impact.

Keep the photos coming!

Whew, this thread and the flickr group are beyond amazing!

The article is up!
http://www.etsy.com/blog/en/2012/packaging-ideas/

Thank you so much to everyone for posting! I was really touched looking through the posts at how much care everyone puts in. These buyers are in for a treat!

There were sooo many that are not in here that are sooo feature worthy! Alas, a lot of it just came down to layouts, and even some of my favorite packaging didn't make it :(

Also, there were a number of people with amazing branding/promotional materials. We are going to do some things around branding/promotion, so we will feature you then!

Thanks again, everyone!

Nothing to show you unfortunately, but I'm anxiously awaiting this article! I would love some inspiration for packaging, because right now my packaging is very run of the mill. I can't wait to see what every one has come up with!

I just got branded stickers to put on my packages!

Their multi-tasking: they're pretty, they brand the package as part of the product, and they could be used to seal the packages if I wanted.

There's a photo in my About page, but I'll upload to the flickr pool too.

I'm working on my packaging, too - I've started printing out better labels for my soap. Once I get a shot of them, I'll get you one. :D

I've just revamped my packaging. After receiving a delightfully constructed package from another etsy seller, I thought it was time to up the ante!

I have some cute striped multi-colored tissue paper, which I wrap my crocheted item in. I tie it with ribbon (real ribbon, not just wrapping paper ribbon) and slip two business cards under the bow--one for the buyer and one for a friend! I'm also sure to put "thank you" on the first business card, because I'm so grateful for their purchase. Finally, into a trusty outer package envelope and off it goes!

I use a 2" metal tin that I put a sticker that matches my banner on. I put silver tissue paper inside to protect the items. I then add a business card and a thank you card with a return customer discount code. It all goes into a bio-degradable bubble mailer. I think the tin and mailer match the theme of my shop and I've gotten really good feedback about my packaging. Buying everything in bulk it really isn't super expensive and I know my items will arrive safely.

I have started adding a picture of my packaging as my fifth picture.

I used to pay a lot for boxes and packaging that weren't very effective. I have found that the most economical packaging, while still presenting your product as something special, is to wrap it in tissue paper that matches your brand and secure it with a branded sticker.

I consider packaging to be very important for my shop. With pricier items, I felt that customers would expect a gift box. Many of my items are given as gifts, and I wanted the jewellery to be ready for gift-giving. When my customer buys something for herself, I want her to feel as though she is unwrapping a special gift just for her. Pretty packaging also adds to the anticipation. :)

It took me a long time to find matte, dark purple boxes. Then I included purple velvet bags and some ivory ribbon. I wanted the overall look to be simple and elegant.

As for branding, I had the same wonderful etsy seller design both my banner and my business card. I'm so happy with them and I feel that they suit my shop perfectly!

My Unblockers writer dice come in a little velvet pouch with a vintage fountain pen nib on one of the strings. I attach the tags and a mini business card to the other string. I hope the extra touches help recipients feel like they're really doing something special to nurture their creativity.

I show the packaging in the last photo here:

Exciting! I love packaging. My basic packaging is shown in the last photo of this listing:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/104700076/ursa-major-constellation-necklace-large

and I'll take some photos of the others, since I jazz it up a little bit depending on the item. Will have to take pics and post them later. :)

Hi Nickey,

I like to add a photo which includes the box that the item will be packed in.

I always draw/swirl on my packages, whether I'm sending a print in a flat envelope, an embroidery hoop in a bubble envelope, or several items in a box:

I try keeping things consistent no matter what I do. I always include a personal handwritten note thanking the buyer for their purchase and when the item fits, they receive it in my signature orange box, wrapped as shown in photo five of this listing.

Looking forward to hearing others ideas too!

Here's the Etsy treasury I made recently called "Truly Beautiful Packaging and Labels." One of my most popular themes.

I add it to every item in my shop. I use boxes in random colors, so I took a picture of them all :-)

I hand stamp my enveloppes with colorful buttons. I think it puts more emphasis that the contents are handmade.

You can find a picture in the 3rd photo on my about page

OOOh, I will have to upload some photos of my packaging, which evolves a bit with each package I send out but I like where I'm going...

I try to emphasize my branding and my aesthetic. My dolls are expensive, and worth it, and I want my packaging to reflect my values of quality artistry, handmade and well made. I have gotten great feed back from customers on all of the little touches that I include in their package. My tags are hand-stamped on paper that I tea stain myself. I enclose a little organza thank you sachet, with a bit of dried lavender from my garden, a mini Moo card, a hand stamped thank you and a couple of other little goodies. I know that when I make a purchase, I notice and love the details. To me, that is one of the grand differences between Etsy and the mall.

So excited to hear what others are doing and to read a relevant holiday article!! My first holiday season on Etsy:)

Thanks! My packaging is in the last photo of almost all my listings including the one that follows. My packaging is often a selling point especially if the customer is buying a gift for their bridal party. They love that it is already gift ready and so very bridal.

These smell so good, and the containers are neat, and the velvet bag is wonderful too! What a very happy parcel to receive in the mail. :)

I have product inserts on some of mine. I've gotten alot of positive feedback on the presentation. Each are in their own little ready to gift packaging or wrapped in a coordinating tissue paper and bow.
