Look for the HELPERS

In light of today's tragic events, I wanted to share a quote that may lift a bit the curtain of complete despair:

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." To this day, especially in times of "disaster," I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world." - Fred Rogers

You may find this PBS resource helpful when talking with your children about the things hey hear on the news: http://www.pbs.org/parents/talkingwithkids/news/

To all of us trying to process what happened today and at the same time trying to reassure our little ones,
let's look for the helpers
and there are so many,
especially in the handmade community!

Re: Look for the HELPERS

Very nice, Julia. No one like Mr. Rogers to help us feel better in light of this horribly sad day.

Re: Look for the HELPERS

Not just in Connecticut, we lost a two members of our swim family tonight. Mom & one of their twin daughters. the older daughter is the same age as ours and have swam together for a while now. So sad when when tragedy strikes.

Re: Look for the HELPERS

I never really knew fear until my children were born. Thank you for sharing that, Juila :) My heart breaks for all parents and especially the families of those taken from the world too early.

Re: Look for the HELPERS

I saw this on Facebook tonight too. I'm going to make sure my children know this. My kids are in high school but you're never too old to look for a helper.

I am absolutely speechless over what happened today. How does a parent move on from this?

Re: Look for the HELPERS

Wonderful post, Julia. Thank you for sharing. Nicole, I know exactly what you mean about not knowing real fear until you had children. I tried explaining to my boys what happened today because I know at least my kindergartener will hear about it at school. So, I wanted to be the one to explain it as best I could. I said a prayer with my boys tonight for the families, too. I think it's important to teach them how to pray and think of others while they are hurting or grieving.

Re: Look for the HELPERS

Thank you so much for this. I work at an elementary school and have a 3rd grade daughter so today's unimaginable tragedy hit very close to home. All my prayers and love goes to those involved. Let us all be "Helpers" and examples to our children.

Re: Look for the HELPERS

Oh my goodness, thank you for sharing this! I teach 1st and 2nd graders. There'll be many questions on Monday, and I'll remember this to tell them.

Re: Look for the HELPERS

I know what you are saying, Nicky, about becoming a parent and then truly knowing what fear is. How true that is! All of us are so fortunate to be able to squeeze our kiddos one more time and then some more.

Growing up as a child I had many worries (you know, monsters in the closet kind of thing), but never did I think that school is an unsafe place. I hope that even when there are no words, we can still find a few for reassurance and support. The young ones everywhere are the ones most affected...

My children are 26 and 28 and I can tell you that no matter the age you always worry about your children! We need to keep all the families in our prayers!

Re: Look for the HELPERS

This is such a good one: 'look for the helpers'
I should think about it more when the world makes me sad...
