Its not too late to call me an idiot

... But I'm seriously thinking of changing my shop name this week.

In fact, I have already posted my new banner and updated my announcement and profile to test it out. Please click through and take a look. And then come back here and let me know all the ways that I'm making a mistake.

You know, before its too late.

Thanks!
:-)

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

I don't think in your description you should say "geeks" . It sounds negative and not something you should use.

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

I like the new banner too. I agree with EmmasEarrings, lose the geeks, maybe replace with 'and people of all other persuasions'. Nice shop.

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

I like the new name, although I like ArtsiBitsi too.
I'm just concerned about buyers who know you as ArtsiBitsi being able to find you, since you've already had so many sales as ArtsiBitsi.
I agree with EmmasEarrings - I don't think the word 'geek' needs to be there.
Good luck!

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

Thanks for the feedback.

Actually most of my items are listed in the Geekery category, so my primary target market would not see the term 'geek' as a negative. But its good for me to know that other buyers might be turned off, so I took the word out of my description.

AshDazzle, did you find the banner? Its at the top of ArtsiBitsi.etsy.com.

I want to change my name to Bag Chemistry because I think that it might be more obvious. My current name is cute, but it is hard to spell. And although I have had a lot of sales, I'm not really a household name. I hope that I will be able to keep my current customers and just expand my base.

:-)

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

Are you sure that Bag Chemistry is not taken?

I agree that the only worry is the customers that know you by that name and search for you again. ...Every once in a while I search "by seller" to purchase again. But the favorites, and everything else will stay the same so I think you are safe. Bag Chemistry is a great name!

BTW I am changing my name. I came up w/ a-z way too quickly without much thought for silly reasons. Very stupid. My banner now reflects my new name, which is my name, and I am planning to change it as soon as I am able.

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

@ArtsiBitsi...............I like "geeks'. I don't find it offensive or negative.....geekery is a section and a search term, there's nothing wrong with its terminology or usage.

List, describe and tag as you would search......simply, directly and clearly. Try not to get wrapped up in the latest tweek or twist. Stay true to you and your work.

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

I think it looks great. The concern seems to be changing the name might lose repeat customers. Are you selling under your current name? I'm not even sure that it is a concern, check the Etsy Boards. I think they are offering a link from the old shop name to the new. Otherwise; go with what feels right. In the end you'll be happier with your shop and it will reflect in your efforts.

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

I'm pretty sure that Etsy is going to redirect the old store traffic to the new URL, so as long as people are clicking links, I won't lose any of my customers.

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

I think, personally, if you're catering to geeks, go ahead and call them geeks! The banner and the bags are geeky (in a good way, of course), so I say, run with it! You don't have to be all things to all people. Those who are confident enough in their geekiness to carry a geeky monster messenger bag won't mind being called out, they'll probably like it. I think it's good branding, personally.

Though I am not a geek, I am indeed a nerd, and I fully own the moniker, so I think I speak with the voice of experience.

Go with the name change. :) your new banner is cool - and I think your bags will appeal to more than just geeks.

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

Geek on Etsy is not a derogatory term. You always have to know it what context a word is used in. I would not be offended to see it on here.

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

I agree, go ahead and call your buyers geeks if that's what they are! I'm quite happy to be called a geek, and by the way, I love your bags AND the new name!
Go with your instincts!

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

Ayyy... I went to your shop to look at your banner and I loved the colors, but I could not make out the name (shame on me). I kept looking at the squares, trying to figure out if I was supposed to join those, or whether I had to decipher a puzzle. It was not until I read further down this thread that I realized it was Bag Chemistry. I went right back and checked it out again, and there it was! I mention this because maybe some people, like me, =( will not be able to make sense of it on the first try because of the way it is written. I love the name, by the way.

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

Of course its up to you but I don't find the name 'Bag Chemistry' very inviting. Everyone knows you as ArtsiBitsi which is so catchy and easy to remember. As my mother the school teacher would say 'it's euphonious'. If I was renaming your shop to give a better idea of what you offer to new shoppers, I'd call it "ArtiBitsiBags" That would cover the old ones that know you and love you and the new ones too. JMHO.

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

I think "Bag Chemistry," with its attendant logo, exudes geekiness. I don't think it really needs to be inviting, just geeky. After all, you're not selling potpourri sachets!

I'd keep ArtsiBitsi as your user name so customers will know you're the same person. Anyway, how many repeat buyers do you get? If a high percentage of buyers are repeat customers, then a name change might not be a good idea, but if not, there's much less to lose. We are familiar with your name because of the forums, but most buyers find things from search. Having "Bags" in your title will help SEO, which is no small matter.

Re: Its not too late to call me an idiot

I think geeks don't think geek is offensive. It's mostly non-geeks who still think it's derogatory. ;)

I'm a geek and don't find it offensive. What if you put in your shop announcements "Formerly ArtsiBitsi"?
