Re: Is April usually dead?

My shop has been getting slowly but steadily busier. I'm into my second year, so don't really have a lot of history to compare to.

Re: Is April usually dead?

My stuff isn't seasonal, been promoting as usual off Etsy, tweaking and improving here and there, listing new products and still things have taken a nose dive since March!

Re: Is April usually dead?

I agree - keep working on SEO and photos! I had 25 orders last April 1-22....so far this month I am at 109 orders.....don't give up! It takes time on Etsy :)

Re: Is April usually dead?

March was more dead for me, I think. I had tumbleweeds roaming, I'm sure!
I'm trying to add some more items to my shop now, as a few unique items have sold recently. I have my fingers crossed that it will up traffic a little :)

Re: Is April usually dead?

Thank god for Facebook is all I can say. Thanks to sales I have from people who are on my fanpage I have just broken even with March, but I've had virtually no spontaneous Etsy sales for around 2 weeks now!

I think this April has been super slow "insert cricket noises here ". I have been making some new things with my down time. Don't panic, it will pick up.

Re: Is April usually dead?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'dead'.

Each retail sector will have slower months. In those months you simply have to get out and work harder for each sale.

My slower months usually start around May and run until August so I do extra marketing during those months.

Right now I'm well up over last years sales numbers at for this time of the month so I really can't complain.

Re: Is April usually dead?

January, February and March were very good compared to last year. April, sadly, nothing... I have had a number of sales this week at work for Mother's day. Overall, April has been very disappointing on Etsy. I am glad I am not the only one.

Re: Is April usually dead?

This is my first April, I'm at 10 sales which I'm happy about. Last month I had 4, and went over 4 weeks (Feb into March) without a single sale - that seemed to be my 'dead time'.

Re: Is April usually dead?

I also noticed that everything changed between March and April. I mean, things were slow in March and I blamed the Spring Break weeks, but things have been even worse in April.

Honestly, my hits were non-existent in April, until I started doing the search ads. That's the only thing that's had people looking at my shop.

I noticed that in one of these threads it's been mentioned that Relevancy has been changed in some way. And I'm also wondering if Searches defaulting to "Relevancy" may be the problem.

What I mean is, I know that people use to say all the time that renewing listings periodically would bring in new people. That's because it would bring you to the top of the list for your item. Well, with searches defaulting to "Relevancy" instead of newest items, that might get rid of that advantage.

And since I don't think it's been announced that searches default to Relevancy, lots of folks may not realize (may not have noticed) they aren't seeing the newest items out there.

The announcement that relevancy would be the default search was announced in August 2011

https://www.etsy.com/blog/news/2011/keeping-it-relevant-default-search-is-now-sort-by-relevancy/

so if people haven't noticed that the search has changed after 20 months they really need to pay a bit more attention to things.

Re: Is April usually dead?

Relevancy simply means that buyers find those products best matching what they are looking for.
That is what we all want, buyers and sellers alike.
Buyers finding what they want = increased sales.

But the bottom line is: if you want many sales, you have to work hard (and have talent)!

Re: Is April usually dead?

Bea you can't just keep saying that people, aren't making sales because they're not working hard enough or aren't talented, I work my butt off 10-12 hours a day at least six days a week on my business, and people love what I do. There has been a shift, I am marketing and promoting as hard as I ever do, I still rank on the first page for a large portion of my items and yet my views and sales (from Etsy) are down. My sales are great in the crafts fairs, on facebook and I'm getting sales on other small selling sites like Lulla and mycraftportal. I had an amazing month in March, but I don't see how my stuff is seasonal! You statements are a little sweeping and more than a bit patronising to those of us experiencing a change despite our best efforts.

Re: Is April usually dead?

I got some sales this month but it's been tiring since even views are so slow these days. I think if I promoted my items and was this active last month I would've gotten more views and sales.

Re: Is April usually dead?

We had quite a good April, but clearly some things are seasonal (people search for different thinks in Spring than in the winter). Most important is not to just post products and then sit and wait... like in real live, if you are on a busy market, you need to make sure people stop at your booth:-) A bad month is not the problem, but if it stays like that, you should try to find other ways to attract people to what you do...

A good way to promote your etsy shop AND to find a new audience is ezebee.com and other free social marketplaces... and a good way to use the quiet months...

Re: Is April usually dead?

This April has been good for me, I sold a total of 21 items and it's been my best revenue month yet. I had 0 sales last April, but I worked very hard to improve my SEO and photos this past year.

Re: Is April usually dead?

I find my Etsy shop ebbs and flows similar to my used bookstore online. April has been very quiet in both.

Re: Is April usually dead?

Views have been down for at least two months, maybe three, and yet I have more sales this April than last year. I jus keep plugging away, trying to get better at SEO and all that. I also try not to let it get me discouraged and focus instead on what I want to finish to list next.

Re: Is April usually dead?

For whatever the reason, I do think that April is slow. I love looking at my stats...I complare them to last week, last month, last year, etc. If it can be examined, I've probably done it (it's my math background peeking through). So, while I'm doing about 35% more business than last year (revenue, # of sales, per month, per year-to-date, etc), this month, especially, is slower than others. I have many more listings than last year and I'm even listing about 4-5 items per day, but still things are very slow.

If we all knew why, maybe we could do something about it!
