In regards to the new relevancy searches...

I don't know what the best way to title some of my listings is. Here's my question:

A large portion of our shop is organic reusable sandwich and snack bags. Now, according to my shop stats, the search term used most is "reusable sandwich bag." Do I title ALL of my listings with these three words first, like this:

"Reusable Sandwich Bag - Organic Eco Friendly - Red"

Because I don't want my listings to get lost amongst the tons of non-organic sandwich bags out there (and there are a lot to get lost in). So if someone is looking specifically for "organic" sandwich bags, perhaps a better title would be this:

"Reusable Organic Sandwich Bag - Eco Friendly - Red"

Or even:

"Organic Sandwich Bag - Reusable Eco Friendly - Red"

Or maybe I should mix it up and have some of each? Does anyone have any idea??

Thanks!

Re: In regards to the new relevancy searches...

I was told it's the first three words that count the most so I would use the first or third example for your listing.

I am still trying to figure it out myself..... But what about "Organic Reusable Sandwich Bags....." - that way you are still capturing your niche as well as the strong search term. Just a thought- like I said I'm still working on it myself! Good luck!

Yes I think the way it was explained is the order of tag words matter as far as search results go where as the order of your regular tags doesn't matter. So I think the format "Reusable Organic Sandwich Bag - Eco Friendly - Red" would be the way to go.

Re: In regards to the new relevancy searches...

So I did an experiment last night trying to figure out the mystery of this whole thing. I have two similar listings one for a single cupcake charm and the other for a lot of 5. I searched "cupcake charm". I found out that my title "5 Cupcake Charms" came before my listing titled "Cupcake Charm". I noticed the ones that were placed before my item titled "Cupcake Charm" had titles like "pink Vanilla cupcake charm" "rainbow sprinkle cupcake charm" "pink and purple cupcake charm", so I think putting red resusable sandwhich bag may benefit you more.

Originally, I did the experiment to see if the renewing process really is invalid now. I have concluded it is. Because I had renewed my listing for the single cupcake charm 10 hours before doing my experiment and my lot of 5 has not been renewed since july 31st. My lot of 5 shows before my single cupcake. From what I gathered last night renewing only counts if a buyer is shopping in a broad category like cupcake or charms. However, this means to esty that I will be halting my renews for the time being.

I don't know if this helps any but I am going to be doing a lot of searching, and really trying to work on SEO until etsy comes out with more clear guidelines for getting seen in searches.

Re: In regards to the new relevancy searches...

I keep my listing titles simple, three words....maybe four. I do on some occasions end up with a few more than I should.

I'd probably mix it up a little so you capture more than one search term.

Re: In regards to the new relevancy searches...

Thanks for the advice! I think I will mix it up. There are several different ways to title my items, and I certainly have enough to do a few each way.

MissEs, that is really interesting! I have also wondered if I should continue renewing like I have been (5-8 items per day), or if it's pointless now. I think I'll continue on a much smaller level, like one a day.

Yes I agree scale back. I will admit I did renew one other item around the same time yesterday and saw a new favorite and new views. Do some intense SEO research it can only help on here and on the internet as a whole. This is my current plan of action!

Re: In regards to the new relevancy searches...

here's a question I have. We make a lot of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and jewelry/ trinket bags... being that there will be so many searches coming back with bracelet / necklace / earrings what can I do to make me stand out. Would someone mind looking at my shop and helping me possibly?

Re: In regards to the new relevancy searches...

On my jewelry would I put earrings first and then wolf or what ever they are and on my amulet bag would the first work be amulet?

Re: In regards to the new relevancy searches...

I know it's been said, but the key to titles is to think like a buyer when you're writing them.

wolflady - if I were shopping for an amulet bag I would search first for an amulet bag and then refine my search from there adding colors, or size, or shape to narrow down my search. These are the kinds of descriptors you should have in your title for amulet bag.

Think like a buyer!

Re: In regards to the new relevancy searches...

Limeys - This much I do understand (I wish I knew more...) What I have read over and over again this week is that the MOST important words in your title are the first 3 words. So for example, in this listing:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/77132253/art-deco-sun-shaped-tanzanite-swarvorski

"Earrings" is literally the last word of your title. It should be somewhere in the first three. Now I'm not a jewelry seller, so I don't know much about titles for earrings, but maybe something like "Art Deco Earrings..." should lead your title. They say whatever you think your customer will type in to find your products.

Have you checked your Shop Stats and looked at the keywords most used to get to your shop? That's where I got my idea for titles from. :)

Re: In regards to the new relevancy searches...

I agree with LeafAnd. I try to do my titles the way I would search for something. If I am looking for chili pepper potholders I am doing my title that way. I use the first word to tell what it is....potholders chili peppers. I also use Craftopolis and now shop stats to see what words people are using when they find me and try to use them in titles and tags.

Good luck everyone!

:)

Re: In regards to the new relevancy searches...

To pick my title words, I went to the Etsy search bar and started typing 'messenger bag'. Thats when the search engine suggested 'canvas messenger bag'. If those are the words that people are searching for, I want them in my title.

I try not to put too much importance on the tags that craftopolis says that people used to find me. I'm worrying about the people who are looking for me with different tags than the ones I know about.

On the other hand, the Etsy stats page says that I am getting a lot of hits from people searching Google for "pirate backpacks". So I am going to add a few more bags with a pirate theme.

:-)

Re: In regards to the new relevancy searches...

Well here's a question... This is one of my newest listings, so I did the tags differently here. I've used the word "pillowcase" over and over again with a different word in front of it each time. Is this desirable? Does anyone know? Is this better than all of those first words separate?
