I get where you're coming from, and I know your heart is in the right place, but you need to know that Invisible Children is a REALLY crummy charity.
http://wilwheaton.tumblr.com/post/18920717928/thedailywhat-on-kony-2012-i-honestly-wanted-toThey have one of the lowest ratings possible for charities, and they refuse to provide the Better Business Bureau with the necessary materials so that the BBB can evaluate them. Barely 30% of donations actually goes to help children in Uganda.
Even more disconcerting is this photo of IC's founders posing with weapons (a la Greg Mortenson):
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_-PnDZmngAhM/Sa_KBGNySiI/AAAAAAAAAJY/uBOfiAysghs/s1600-h/IMG_2941.JPGI worked in human rights, and let me tell you that NO ONE I worked with would ever pose with weapons. It's sick. It's sure as he-l-l disrespectful to the victims of violence. It's something that people do to stroke their egos, and the founders of IC are all about stroking their own egos (notice how much of the video unnecessarily focuses on the founder, and how he mentions that he just *loves* being in movies?).
Moreover, they're posing with members of the Ugandan military... another group that is known to rape and kill civilians.
I know that you're trying to help, so I would like to suggest that you look to Amnesty International, UNICEF, and Medicinnes sans Frontiers (Doctors without Borders) as NGOs to support.
Invisible Children is not a charity that I would want my money going to. Nor do I want it playing a role in making foreign policy.
