How to get to the first page of the search

How do you get your items to the first page of a search. We sell garters and if I search for garter ours never comes up first, other stores ALWAYS have theirs on the first page, how do we get ours to show up there. Does advertising do it? Thank you!

A search for 'garters' in handmade search brings up 23,377 listing (and 250 pages of listings) on Etsy.
Why do you believe you should be on that very first page?
And what do you do to make that happen?
Remember there are thousands of sellers trying that same thing...

When searching for a garter I would put the color first. ie:
Purple garter so put those two words at the beginning of your title, description and make it one of your tags. That should help.
There are too many garters to try to get the the first page of that search so work on more specific searches.

Natasha is making a good point.
You really don't want to worry about showing up on the first page of a generic search.
Instead you want to make sure that buyers looking for YOUR unique garters will find them.
How? SEO is the answer (search engine optimalisation)!

Great points Natasha and BeaG. I would also like to add to look at the listings that do come up on the front page and see what their titles and tags include.

Also, make sure the first 3 words of your titles and descriptions contain your most important words. For example, your title starts with "Bridal Garter And..."

You could definitely get rid of AND and take advantage of those first three words. We noticed a difference when we did this with our titles and the first words of the item description. You have a beautiful shop! Makes me want to get married again:)

Example for you:

garters, wedding accessories, bridal garter, ,....

then add lots more of whatever people might search to come across garters.

I'm on the first page for a few of my items and I currently only have 12 items. I think it's all about SEO, titles and tags.

I just listed a couple of items, checked the new holidays section of browse about 10 minutes later and my purse gift card holder was right there on page 1. It made me do a mini happy dance.

Thank you everyone. I don't expect to be on the first page everytime, I just was wondering how someone selling the same type of product does end up there everytime. We are new to Etsy so there is definitely a learning curve.

One of the reasons could be (I haven't checked) that they have hundreds of garters in their shop. Every extra item is an extra chance to be found.
And they must obviously make good use of SEO.

For a new shop you are doing well.
And asking questions is a smart thing to do!

I just started my shop this year so am still learning alot... so hope I am not being too bold!! I did check out your shop and like it! I have been looking at many things on Etsy and haven't come across what you are offering yet; so I think that's great potential, imho. Some of the advise I have been noticing that you might consider taking advantage of is to make an "About" page. Also more pics for individual listings eg. the snowman with a top hat table runner: Although you have the size in the printed area I would have liked to see a photo of the whole thing... is there a snowman head at each end? Maybe show with a centerpiece? Also, would this work as a dresser scarf too... add more uses?

First, Use exactly the keywords that shoppers use when they search for items like yours. Do some keyword research to find the keyword phrases that shoppers use when they shop for garters, for example. It is very hard to rank well in Etsy search results for a generic keyword like "garters." It does take sales and real favoriting from customers to make it to the first page, Until your shop grows enough with sales and favorites, try ranking well on more specific keywords such as "wedding garter set." Doing this is also good because shoppers become more specific with the keywords they use when they ready to buy. Just be sure to use keywords that shoppers use - do not rearrange the words and do not add other words in the middle of the keywords.

Here is very short list of keywords I found on Google Adwords for "garter." The number on the right is the average number of monthly searches using each keyword:

bridal garter sets 480

I am so glad I found this thread! I'm still new to SEO and all the information is greatly appreciated. Caroline, thank you for the youtube link.
I've found that my craft is highly saturated and fine tuning SEO and long tail search is challenging.
I've noticed that items on the first page are all over the board when it comes to number of items in the respective shops- For instance, when I searched face serum, the first shop has 168 items, second has 39, third has 68.

I think I read somewhere in the SEO stuff that it depended on how much you spend on your promotion of each item...I wish I could remember exactly what it said but maybe you can locate it there...also the amount of times a word is used..green in the title, green in the description, green in the tag ...good luck!

I am in your position years ago. I feel that my shop sunken and hidden. I also only got low views. Glad to found someone who used to struggle finally nail it.
