How much would you pay for a canvas bag?

Hi Everyone!

I'm a photographer, and I really want to start selling canvas/tote bags with my photographs on them. I'm just not sure how much people would be willing to pay for one. How much do you think is a fair price to ask for? How much would you spend on one?

Thanks so much!

Re: How much would you pay for a canvas bag?

I like canvas bags, but I'm pretty picky with the ones I use; they have to have pockets inside. I generally will pay $15-25 on a canvas bag depending on the size, the print on the front and how functional it is.

It looks like they range on Etsy from $10-$150 (yikes haha) so I would research how much it would cost per bag for you to make them, with buying the supplies in bulk, first. Then search Etsy for similar style bags and see what they are selling for.

I'd try to see if there are sizes that are under-represented. I know I'm always happy when I go to a garage sale and find a really huge one.

You can sell a large tote for more, and it wouldn't cost that much more or take that much more work to produce.

I am not a good one to ask about price, since I buy everything from garage sales or thrift shops.

Re: How much would you pay for a canvas bag?

Are you planing on using liquid light and printing them yourself in a dark room, or using an ink printer? It seems like if you had a commercial printer do it, it might cost you more than people would be willing to pay (I'm guessing based on the cost of a stretched canvas print... but i could be way off base). So, I guess my real question is, how much is production going to cost you?

I love the idea! I promise I won't steal it, but I am wondering how you came up with it, and how you plan to execute.

Oh, and to answer your question, I would probably pay $25 max, just because I can get canvas bags so cheap at the grocery store.

Re: How much would you pay for a canvas bag?

Thanks so much everyone!

Well, I'm currently working on the execution part. I would preferably be getting them made elsewhere in bulk, but I'm still looking at printers and manufacturing companies. I might try making them myself and seeing what my husband and I can come up with, since at the same time I would still like to say that they're handmade by me. But I'm not sure, I wanted to see what others thought would be a good price range for them and see if they're profitable first.

Again thanks for the feedback so far!

xoxo

Re: How much would you pay for a canvas bag?

Sounds like you're getting ready to make a "different" type of canvass bag!! If you are going to use your custom artwork in the process then you should get paid more than $25 for a custom tote!!

More research!!! Don' t sell yourself short! :D

Re: How much would you pay for a canvas bag?

For me it would depend on the bag.... is it a bulk bag that you can be in a cheap store or a cute canvas bag that was stitched by someone.
If I am buying a cheap bag in a store... $10 max.
for a cute one, handmade, up to $35.
Will depend on size... my hubby just bought me a canvas messenger bag for about $25 (has pockets and such)... but is plain canvas.

I would pay up to $40 if I were in love with it, but closer to $25 more practically. Love the idea!

Good luck.

Re: How much would you pay for a canvas bag?

If it was really well-made, I'd probably pay a max of $40 for the bag. I'd be more apt to spend that amount if it had a liner and pockets inside too. :)

Re: How much would you pay for a canvas bag?

it depends on the bag. the most important thing is making sure that you're getting enough for it. don't undersell yourself.
i use this formula
((cost of materials x 4) + (time spent x hourly wage)) x 1.1

Re: How much would you pay for a canvas bag?

I feel like $15-25 is the price I'd expect for a tote bag, but there are definitely features you could add to make it seem worth more.
