How does calculated shipping add $ for additional items?

Hi Team,
I started using calculated shipping a lot more during Christmas, and was very happy with it. Most of my orders from Oct.-Dec. are just one item. During the rest of the year, I tend to get orders with 2-4 items, and I want to know if calculated shipping takes that into account. If I have to use a larger box and the weight increases for multiple items, how does it calculate that?

I had been using Calculated shipping for my coasters which I can only ship one set in a box at a time. I wanted to mainstream the rest of my products which are sets of cards, so I switched to calculated shipping for them too part way through the season. I had an order that had multiple sets of cards and calculated shipping charged for each order even though they were being shipped together in the same envelope (which was how it was done before). I am still sorting this out with Etsy, they admitted it's a fault with Calculated shipping, but I don't know if or when it might change to accommodate for orders like that.

I may even be losing sales I don't know about over this. A customer tonight wanted to buy 6 items, granted these are table centerpieces, but it wa quoting het $211 for shipping. So the calculated shipping is just multiplying x qty. I guess I will have to go back to set amounts, once the new rates are out.
I assured her I would refund the overpayment, then also went in and switched it back to $10 per item, and let her know that, but I haven't heard back. I hope I didn't loose a big sale over this.
