How do you hone your searches?

When I want to look for something, I usually start with a general keyword, then try keywords which will knock out items I'm not interested in. For example, I looked at wallets, which is huge, so I changed to Men's Wallets to knock out the flowered clutches. That was too formal, so I moved to unisex, then decorative, etc. When I found the perfect wallet for my husband, I bought it.

How do you search? I'm redoing my tags. It think it would be helpful to know how other people shop on etsy.

Thanks.

Re: How do you hone your searches?

I always try to search using three keywords or less with the most relevant first

As for selecting new keywords, studying your Shop Stats for keywords may provide insight into what keywords are/are not working for you. Also you could try searching under keywords that you are considering and see how many hits you get. Selecting a few keywords that are very specific is always a good idea as it's better to gain a few correct hits that may result in purchases than many that are so vague they miss their mark completely. Also don't forget the value of an occasional commonly misspelled word in your keyword selection as if it's commonly misspelled, chances are it will strike gold as fewer shops will be using the wrong spelling.

Happy Sales!

Re: How do you hone your searches?

It depends what I'm searching for. A lot of times, I know pretty close to exactly what I want, so I'll search very specifically. But other times, I do a general search, then make it more specific as I decide what I like/want. Hope that helps.

Re: How do you hone your searches?

I'll usually have a pretty good idea what I'm looking for, so I'll start with that.

If that doesn't give me a small enough sampling I'll start eliminating keywords until I've got it narrowed down.

One thing that I have noticed over the years is that customer feedback can be extremely useful when writing titles.

For example, I sell a steel weaving needle with a blunt tip so my title was

" Steel weaving needle, 5", large eye, blunt tipped"

But one of my customers said that they were looking for a 'blunt end' steel needle and stumbled across mine. So now, my title says 'blunt tipped end'
