How do you create a banner?

Bit by bit, I work on the details of my shop. As you will see, I need a real shop banner. I am pretty quick with learning new things, at present I have no idea what program to use to make a banner. How did you create yours? Any simple tipa are most appreciated!

I used Gimp, with some patience is easy to use

I simply took my avatar and manipulated a portion of it a number of times using Corel.

It took me about a half hour.

I also use Photoshop. But also one can buy banners here on Etsy for a low price.

i dont have photoshop or corel. I started with a banner i made with picasa, then eventually bought one on etsy. They range from $5-20. You can search etsy "shop banners", and the store will put your info on it, you choose the template. Most of them come with a few avatars, an "on vacation" banner, a reserved listing avatar, and thank you picture. The more expendsive ones even have matching business card templates! Then you can get em printed yourself. The one I have now only cost $5! I really liked it at first, but think i'm ready to get a new one.

I downloaded Gimp, but I can't understand how to do a single thing with it, so I tried the old fashioned Microsoft Paint, combined with some photos stored in my computer, and I could kick myself for all the time I wasted trying to get free versions of Photoshop, or how long I wasted trying to work out how Gimp works.
MS Paint was free, already preinstalled in most PCs, and I find it great!

I'm a Graphic Designer so I'm used to creating designs. Even though mine is not the best but I wanted to keep it simple using my logo. I always use Photoshop for my designs.

I found it fairly easy, but I have a bit of photoshop experience.

I like Picasa. I find Gimp confusing. I have also used pixlr online but Picasa is my favorite for most everything, including making banners.

I also found gimp very confusing, and am using picmonkey now. I am not very adept at this, but picmonkey is easy enough to do something simple.

I created it in picmonkey.com. I used one of my Jpeg photo and did it under photo collage. There's a few variations and you can crop it to etsy's requirement as well.

You can also use ribbet.com. It's easy to use, has tons of options, and you can start with a blank canvas (any size). It's very similar to picmonkey but can do even more.
