Help on eye catching photos and ways to make my product seem unique

Hello!!

I am a new member and am looking for help to make my shop seem unique. I feel like I am one of a million people selling the same thing. I need help on suggestions to make my products seem more unique in the photos.

Also, my newest idea, the "Belly Chic Belt" is a belt meant to wear with plain maternity t's etc. I thought this might be a unique idea. Seems its not totally unique but it is less common than the hair accessories that I have been primarily selling. I would also like ideas on how to help me market to this very niche group of people?

I look forward to being part of this group!

Happy Monday =( and thanks so much!

Re: Help on eye catching photos and ways to make my product seem unique

I have a few ideas for you.

One, try looking at maternity photography websites for posing and composition ideas for your pregnant models. I link to an amazing maternity posing guide here: http://pareandfocus.com/index.htm/must-see-maternity-posing-guide/

Next, I like some of the processing you're doing, like using a blur effect to make the subject stand out, and I have some other suggestions that will make your photos POP.

•Make sure your photos are bright enough - using automatic settings cameras will tend to make photos too dark and if they're not bright enough they'll get "lost" when you see them on a website - use Picnik or GIMP to brighten photos in post processing or exposure compensation in your camera to make them brighter as you take them.

•Make sure they have enough contrast. Adding contrast in a program like Picnik or GIMP will make your photos Pop when they look a little dull or blah..

•Make sure your pictures are the correct colors - cameras don't always get colors (white balance) perfect when switch between light sources. Your outdoor pictures all look like the correct white balance, but the indoor photos look a little off... they're a little warm or yellow looking. You can fix that in a photo editing program like GIMP and you can try getting a better result in camera by choosing the white balance setting to match the light source you're using. Use the sunshine setting for direct sunlight, use the cloud setting for outdoor photos that are in clouds or overcast, use the house setting when you're in shade, and the lightbulb setting when you're using old school incandescent lightbulbs to light your work. Try not to mix light sources in the same photo, as no camera or setting is god at handling colors from many kinds of light at once (avoid using incandescent and window light at the same time, etc.)

•Remember what your subject is... the sash or hairband. It's cool that you added a blur around the maternity sash to make the picture more focused on the sash... but since it's not a model or portrait picture we don't even really need your friend's face in there. In fact, having a face, even if it's blurred, can make the viewer's attention go to the face instead of the product. Try cropping the photo so it's still recognizable as a pregnant lady, but it's more about the sash than your friend.

I don't think I can upload photos here, but I can show you an example that I posted on my flickr (I linked it back to your shop). I brightened, cropped, and increased the contrast and I think it's got more of the POP you were looking for. here it is http://www.flickr.com/photos/ninepan/5927538512/in/photostream (I can take the photo down if you like)

Sorry this is so long!!! Hope it helps some!

WOW! Much thanks for all the time and thought you put into your respose! i love the edited photo and you are right. I will have to see if I can edit the image to duplicate it.

You are totally right about the indoor being too yellowish. I have the most time to work on crafting and marketing in the evenings which of course means no natural light so its almost impossible to avoid it.

I hate to do too much tinkering to make the images "pop" becuase often the colors look off.

Great suggestions about the camera settings but I have a cannon rebel dslr and I dont have those settings (I dont think,,,)

Thank you for being so helpful!!!!

No problem!

If you have the canon rebel DSLR, you definitely have all of those settings! You just have to use a semi-automatic mode, or manual mode (P, M, AV, or TV,) :) That's a great camera for Etsy photography btw.

Here's a video on setting WB with the Canon Rebel XSi (might be a little different from your model but it should get you close)

Try playing with the different settings when you're inside to get more accurate colors, and then remember that you can adjust colors in GIMP or Picknik to make them perfect.

Adding a little bit of contrast shouldn't make the colors funky... but they will get weird if you go over board. Be brave! Don't be afraid to edit! Just know when to back off and you'll be fine :)
