Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

Do you have an idea of what brand type you are after?? There are loads of great Point and Shoots out there. I had a canon point and shoot for a while years ago and I absolutely loved it....can't remember the name though :(

I have recently purchased the Canon 600D. I've been using DSLR's for years now since my first point and shoot. I love them and their lenses.

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

I have an expensive nikon camera that I use for professional photography and a fairly inexpensive Panasonic lumix point and shoot that takes awesome photos -- check out my easy shop.
Here's the link to the camera on sale, wicked cheap.

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

I use a Canon PowerShot SD 1300 IS and I love it... it has great macro and is very affordable. It was actually a graduation gift for me but they go for about $120 as of the last time I checked (I have recommended this camera to others). I've seen some going for under $100, too.

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

The panasonic lumix is quite good if you're looking for a point and shoot. I have a Nikon DSLR.

I would suggest using a home made light box, point and shoot camera with a tripod and Picasa (freeware) and your pics will come out great.

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

With any of the canon rebels, you'll get everything you need. They all offer ton of Megapixels (which you don't even really need for Etsy Pix). They have manual functions, which you'll want to use as you learn more about your camera (the more you take control, the better your pictures will be!) And, they all make use of interchangeable lenses.

The real question will be, will you get the lens that comes with the camera, or get the camera body and lens separately so you can get a better lens? Because, honestly, the lens is the most important part of a DSLR camera like the Canon rebel.

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

I think it all depends how much money you want to spend for all the bells & whistles that cameras offer. When i bought my Nikon Coolpix 10M wide, I chose it based on several criteria but the biggest thing for me is the Macro mode. My shots have to get up close and this Nikon really does. The closest it gets is a 0.4 cm I think, and that is really close. I've seen some cameras that the macro gets as close as 4 or 6 ". So that is why I chose my Coolpix. It's a great little camera that isn't too big or clunky, and it has a nice 3" screen on the back to view.

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

@Kat Thanx for the input I somehow have my heart set on a Rebel so will check out in detail I don't want to go beyond $400 I've seen some deals on local kijiji
@Karen I think I'll be sticking to the basic's I've always managed to get sucked in by sales pitches reg. bell's and whistles only to realize the basic was just fine!!!! LOL (alot of $$$$$ later I am somewhat a savvy shopper!!)

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

Like I said on your other thread, if it has a good 'macro' setting, I would go for it. For jewelry, you really want that good close up. I would even go into the store and play around with a few cameras and see if you can get that good close up.

Depending on how advanced you are with shooting, I'm not sure if having a bunch of different functions are necessary (aperture priority, shutter speed, etc.) so one with at least an auto setting, along with maybe manual or 'sport' features would be nice.

I have a Canon I bought a few years ago that works really well in the Macro setting. We also just won a Nikon L120 in a work drawing, which is a nice camera, but I have yet to figure out how to get a good closeup. The camera is worthless to me if I can't set it in a macro setting.

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

I have the Canon Digital Rebel XT and love it. I think the XS is the newer version of it? It has macro, it has automatic modes for when I'm lazy or don't know what I'm doing, it has manual modes for when I actually do need to tweak things, and that's all I need.

Unless you're an advanced photographer who really knows their stuff, the cheapest DSLR models should have more than enough features for you.

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

I just got a Fuji FinePix S3300 (like a week ago) and so far it takes wonderful photos. I used it for a graphic arts class and the instructor said that they really researched cameras for a good cheap camera that students could easily use. I'm going to start retaking some of my photos. What's important (and has been suggested) is get an inexpensive tripod. No matter how steady you think you are the tripod helps. It's on my christmas list ^^.

It's hard picking out a good easy camera.

Thanks for bringing the question up!

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

It's really the photographer, not the camera, that will make the biggest difference for an application like jewelry photos for Etsy. As long as you have the basic essentials (marco mode and the ability to adjust your white balance), any camera in the hands of a competant photographer will do. And if you don't have the photography skills, the most expensive camera with all the bells and whistles won't produce good results.

So really, when trying to decide which camera is right for you, take stock of you skills and abilities and go from there.

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

few of my friends is photographer,,

They said for product photography you can choose Nikon or Canon (DSLR)
Nikon produce many color but weak on white colour.
If your product full color you can choose it.
Maybe Nikon D3100 or Nikon D90

But if your product mostly in white color, you can choose Canon .
Perfect to choose is 60D

I used Sony DSLR.
The color really nice ! But only if when there is plenty of light like afternoon or you can use flash light :)
I used Sony DSLR Alpha 230,, it's cheap :)
But if you want to be pro you can choose Alpha 77 or Nex 7 .

Hope it will help.

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

Look for a deal on ebay or elsewhere online. It's a good idea to know exactly what you want, and to try it out in a store before you buy online, but you can get year old models for a pretty good discount on ebay. Even good lenses (like the 100mm macro that I adore!) go on sale sometimes.

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

Woot.com is having a deal on a Canon Rebel XS including lens today for $399.99. I think the deal ends at midnight.

I think this camera would do great taking pictures for etsy purpose.
(Not sure what is the policy on sharing external links... hope this is not in violation of anything... If so, I apologize...)

Re: Help!!! need to choose camera

I have a Canon Rebel T3. It works really well...does a great job of adjusting light automatically. And for our smaller pieces I made a light box to get the consistent lighting. I used a cardboard box for the framework and velum paper to diffuse 3 inexpensive work lights. I would suggest using bright white bulbs as well.
