Help! People keep misreading my listings!!

Hi there! I always get awesome advice from this team! So, here is a problem I am having... one of the lines in my shop is for tutu dresses. My listings are for sizes infant through children size 6, which is clearly outlined in my listing. This is an example of that listing:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/102436460/flower-girl-tutu-dress-ribbon-sash

I kept getting so many questions and custom requests for larger sizes, so I made this listing which is a price supplement for sizes 7-10:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/101736583/flower-girl-tutu-dress-crochet-bodice

I also have this for my knee length styles. This way, people can purchase the listings together and I don't have to create a custom listing for each and every one. And it has worked for the customers who need a larger size.

The PROBLEM is this: I keep getting customers wanting a whole tutu dress that they see in this price adjustment listing for $20... just the cost of the additional materials for larger sizes. I have some people say.... oh oops.. after I explain the difference, and others that are quite upset, saying that I misled them... even though it clearly states in the listing that this is not for a tutu dress, only a supplement for larger sizes.

I don't want people to get upset, but I don't know how else to separate the two. I feel like creating separate listings for every since tutu for a larger size will take more money to create the listings and make my shop totally confusing.

HELP!!!!!

I'd create a separate listing for larger size dresses, with the total price being the full & final price they pay. You should not have listings in your shop that need to be purchased with something else. I am fairly certain it's against Etsy Terms & Conditions. Also, you need to make purchasing as simple as possible for the customer!

I'm a bit confused myself so I'm not sure how to tell you to fix it.

Re: Help! People keep misreading my listings!!

I would not list as you are; I think Etsy rules would also frown upon your listings.

I would simple have one listing for ONE price up to a specific size but waist sizes, colors and lengths could be custom in a note to seller upon purchase.

For example, listing A is for $30 for full tutu dress sizes 6 mos - size 6.
Listing B is for $40 for full tutu dress sizes 8-14.

As it is you are paying for two listings, the original plus the supplement.
My example is also two listings customized by sizes ; so the cost is the same.

Etsy doesn't want one listing dependent or conditional on another listing which is what you are currently doing. Also, customers would have a better understanding and less confusion on prices and options in my opinion.

HTH!

Re: Help! People keep misreading my listings!!

Why can't you make the "added material for larger size tutu" listing a listing for the larger size tutu at the total price of $118??

Of course it would seem impossible to me that a tutu for a bigger girl is only $20 compared to the smaller girls tutu for $98..which would make me really read your listing, but most people either aren't smart enough to understand or just won't take the time to. You'll have to make it easy for them...most importantly, yourself! :)

..& apparently, from what others are saying here, it's against the rules to list it how it is currently. Good to know!

Hi,
I could be way off here, but I find it a bit confusing to a buyer. I get what you are sayine re. price adjustment, but many people neglect to read everything - they see a pic and a price and that's all they look at.

Is it possible to add a notice on each listing "Price increase of $20 for sizes x to x. " and "Above size x please convo me".

Re: Help! People keep misreading my listings!!

So if I am reading this correctly basically a size 7-10 tutu dress is $118 I don't think you are being misleading with the $20 listing I just think you are asking the customer to do too much work. If I was looking for a tutu dress for a 7-10 year old then I want to click and put that in my cart and continue with the buying process I don't want to have to look for the additional material listing etc...

As a customer I just think it would be easier to see two listings one for the newborn to 6 year old and one for the 7-10 year maybe just start with a few listings for the larger size and then increase as time money permits....or depending on the number of request you currently get for the larger size maybe just keep the newborn to 6 year old size and create the custom listing as needed for the larger size.

I believe the way you have it now will continue to cause problems for you and may even cause you to lose customers.

Re: Help! People keep misreading my listings!!

Most people don't read product description!
I would change thr title so it would start with something like: supplement for....
So people won't think it's a tutu dress.

Re: Help! People keep misreading my listings!!

Yeah, I don't understand why you have your listings set up that way. I would change your 'supplement' listing to just be a listing for older girls tutus..

I know you think it would make it more confusing, but I think the opposite will happen! The drawback is paying for more listings, but what I would do would be only make listings for the sizes people most often request.. then put a note in those listings saying that they should convo you for another size..

Re: Help! People keep misreading my listings!!

I think you are being misleading, because the way it's set up is confusing and DEFINITELY against the rules anyway. You can't have separate listings for extras and add ons. The listing has to be for a tangible complete item(or supply) for sale. You also can't list gift wrap, shipping upgrades (which are coming anyway) as seperate listings. It's confusing and misleading to have it the way you do now.

Re: Help! People keep misreading my listings!!

Much easier to just list the larger sized one as its own listing for the full price.

Re: Help! People keep misreading my listings!!

For the record here is the section of the rules that forbid your listing.

All listings on Etsy must be for a tangible object. (Note: a digital file is considered a tangible object.)
You may not use Etsy to direct shoppers to another online selling venue to purchase the same items as listed in your Etsy shop, as this may constitute fee avoidance. This includes posting links/URLs or providing information sufficient to locate the other online venue(s).
A listing must not be conditional upon the purchase of another listing in your shop (for example: saying "this item may only be purchased along with another item in my shop" is not allowed). This includes listings for item upgrades, shipping upgrades and gift wrapping upgrades.

----
As others have said, just list the dress for the full price for the larger sizes.

Re: Help! People keep misreading my listings!!

Just create a separate listing for the larger size dresses at the full price, and discontinue the 'add on' listing. People will understand this a lot easier.

Re: Help! People keep misreading my listings!!

Well, thank goodness I asked!!!!!!!!

One, I had absolutely NO idea this was against Etsy's rules, which I swear I have read a million times.

Two, so happy to have your thoughts, I suppose I was trying to make it easier and LESS confusing for people and I was doing the opposite! Clearly, the last thing I would want is be misleading... my goodness.

And three...I suppose I have quite a bit of work to do!!!

Thanks everyone :)

Re: Help! People keep misreading my listings!!

I would just have 2 listings, and in each listing link to the other. Just say something like "This dress is in size infant to size 6, if you would like to purchase this dress in size 7 - 10, please visit this link: "

Re: Help! People keep misreading my listings!!

Perhaps, if you've created a whole new listing to cover the cost of extra material, then maybe have the title state what it is, and disregard SEO - afterall, if you use SEO on a listinglike that, people may well be mislead. It's the kind of thing people in your shop will want to see, but not people who are searching around on Etsy generally.
