Have Twitter name match shop name?

A long time ago, my shop was named Rathina because that was just what I used online from playing Everquest/World of Warcraft.

When Twitter came around, I ended up registering as @switchplates mostly because it was available, and I figured, maybe it would rank high on google if people were searching the term switchplates.

Fast forward to when Etsy let you change your shop name, I ended up changing the shop name to ModernSwitch just because I really felt like it fit with what I sold a lot better. I do have the @ModernSwitch name saved, so I can use it at any time.

My question is. Should I keep using @switchplates, or because I am now Modern Switch, should I start to use @ModernSwitch ? I honestly don't know if I ever got people coming to my shop by google searching switchplates and ending up at my twitter, which I guess is the only real reason for keeping it?

Re: Have Twitter name match shop name?

I think it's a good idea to keep the same name everywhere for branding and so customers don't have to look for different usernames/names. Is there a possibility for you to change all your accounts with switchplates or redirect them to modern switch so google doesn't pick up your older name? I would personally change my twitter name to match the new ones, and give all followers a fair warning of the change so they know. Hope this helped!

Re: Have Twitter name match shop name?

I use the same name everywhere online. Before I opened my shop I was known as Crochetgal and people locally know me by that name as well.

Its all a matter of branding.

Re: Have Twitter name match shop name?

I would change it as it is all about branding. And communicate that you have changed your name. You might lose a few followers if they don't get it that it's still you but for the future followers it is simpler to recognise you. You could use your old name in tags so people are still able to find you?

Re: Have Twitter name match shop name?

I agree with the branding idea that everyone has mentioned. My twitter, fb, pintrest, domain name, email, etc are all the same. It's also easier for me to keep track of.

Re: Have Twitter name match shop name?

Unfortunately, my Etsy shop name is too long for twitter! Shop is A Simple Kind of Fancy, and I had to go with @asimplefancy for twitter. Almost the same, but not quite. One of these days I just might have to change the Etsy name to the shorter version. But that will only happen when I use up all business cards, etc.

I would definitely suggest using the same name for all forms of promotion and social media.

Re: Have Twitter name match shop name?

Twitter makes it really easy to change your name .. you don't have to sign up for a new account or move your followers ... just go in and change your name. Super simple! :) I've had three different shops, and changed my Twitter name each time, never had to switch accounts or anything, just go in and change your twitter name. :)
