Re: Has any one shiped a item to this country

I have shipped to UAE before; a friend of mine lives there and was my first customer two years ago when I opened. But other people's experiences don't really help you here; it all comes down to how much the postal services or shipping company is going to charge you. Did you calculate it beforehand? Definitely shop around and find out who can give you the best price to ship your item--USPS, UPS, Fedex, etc.

When I shipped to UAE, I collected $17 for shipping a $58 order, and shipping cost was $16.14. This was two years ago, though, and costs have increased substantially since then. I also don't think that order was as heavy as yours will be.

Also, if you're that concerned about losing money on shipping, maybe you should either increase your item prices or your shipping costs.

Re: Has any one shiped a item to this country

IMHO you shouldn't contact the buyer. You have already charged them for shipping and if you miscalculated what you should have charged, that isn't the customer's fault. You may need to eat the extra and learn from it; it's just not considered good business practice to contact the buyer after the fact and ask for more money for shipping. By contacting them and asking for more money (if that's what you're even intending to do), you are risking getting negative feedback and losing any future sales you might have gotten from that customer.

I agree with Amy. Noelle, you can get an approximate answer by looking at the post office website. You will also have to fill out customs forms. It can be done online or at a post office, if you haven't done it before.

Cute items in your shop, BTW!!

Re: Has any one shiped a item to this country

You tend to save some money if you do your shipping through etsy and it makes doing the customs forms alot easier. You just need to know the weight and your package measurements.

I did ship something there about 6 months ago but rates have increased since then.. Seemed to me that the shipping was about the same as shipping to the UK.

if you are not feeling good about it you can always cancel the transaction and refund the buyer. It is your right and you dont even need to show a reasion.

Re: Has any one shiped a item to this country

I would safely package it with all the care you can, weigh it and go to etsy shipping to calculate how much. If it is going to cost more than charged I would pay it and chalk it up to a lesson learned and then adjust all the shipping prices for your remaining items in your shop. I just messed up yesterday I charged $5.80 for shipping and it ended up costing me $9.27. I had accidentally applied the wrong shipping template.

First Class International postage to Abu Dhabi is $24.05 at the post office. Since Etsy will let you buy First Class International postage online, it should be a bit less (I'm guessing about $22). This is for a 2 pound package. If it weighs less, the postage should be less. :-)

Re: Has any one shiped a item to this country

You can use the ETSY buy shipping label app to find the price. Just don't "confirm and buy" unless you are ready to buy the shipping label.
The guidelines for shipping fragile items is 2 inches of packing material around the plate on all sides. One item should not break.
I agree with the folks that say to buy the postage and ship the item regardless of what it costs. It's part of doing business. If you can't do that, convo the buyer and explain the cost, offer a full refund.
I think I will re-eval my use of "everywhere else" for shipping. Change it to the areas of my usual buyers.

Re: Has any one shiped a item to this country

I've never shipped my pottery overseas, but my larger items cost anywhere between $7-10 to ship within the states. I think its going to cost you quite a bit more to ship that far. I had a potential customer from Canada that inquired about shipping rates and it was estimated at $16-20.

Remember to package your item with bubble wrap and sometimes I will use extra bubble wrap on the sides of the box for extra protection. A rule of thumb I learned was "if your pottery bounces when you drop it a few inches from the ground then you have bubble wrapped well". If you hear any thud noise, then use more bubble wrap. Not that I recommend dropping your pottery, but if you have wrapped it good, you shouldn't have a problem : )

OH I just read your update. You seemed to have gotten lucky with shipping cost. : )

Good luck with your ceramics

Re: Has any one shiped a item to this country

I lived in Dubai for 4 years, it takes about 3 weeks for the item to reach and clear customs. That shipping sounds about right. I usually charge shipping price for 1lb cause of the additional weight of the box and packaging.

Shipping to the UAE for 1lb is:
*first class is currently $16.25, plus you can add a certified mail slip for an additional $1.20, registered slip will be an additional $12.95.
*International priority flat rate shipping (small box) is $23.95
