I am so happy ... after about 4 tries I finally installed Google Analytics!!! For anyone else who is having difficulty, I followed these instructions to the letter (it took two tries so see my comments).
http://www.etsy.com/help/article/230Three comments:
1. When you create your account name, don't put the "www" in front of your shop address (see the second bullet point of the Etsy instructions)
2. When you get to the page that asks you to set the tracking instructions, it no longer says "continue", but "save and finish" (see third bullet point of the Etsy instructions). Before hitting that button, I selected the option for "domain with subdomains" at the top. I'm not certain whether this made a difference, but it worked.
3. When you open the overview page, instead of the tracking code appearing next to "your shop website address", it appears next to the Etsy URL (www.etsy.com) on the website profiles table, which appears automatically when you open the overview page (see the 4th bullet point of the Etsy instructions). The tracking number does indeed have the format UA-XXXXXXX-X. It is very important to have the "-X" on the end, or the tracking won't install properly. This is the mistake I made the first two times I tried.
It has been only about 24 hours and already I have really useful marketing information. What a great tool for free!
Best wishes, all.
