I've used gift certificates before. What I've always done is had the customer tell me the item they would like to purchase and then i custom list it the the amount minus the gift certificate amount. I leave it up for a few days and the transaction always goes through.
I've never had any problems.
Hopefully one day, maybe there will be a coupon code for that!
