Frustrated with Pricing formulas

Am I doing it wrong?

I give myself 15 an hour, is that too high?

Here's the formula I've been using cost + labor x 2 = wholesale x 2 = retail

I use this one b/c the Etsy formula, I have no idea what "profit" should be (labor + materials + overhead + profit = wholesale price x 2 = retail)

I know that I'm not supposed to assume that my customer are in the same income bracket as me, but I just feel the prices these formulas come up with a pretty extreme...

Here are some examples:

Are these prices realistic or am I right in thinking they are too high??

Thanks!

Re: Frustrated with Pricing formulas

how are you frustrated? it's more like confused? :p

I think apart from the first one (fresh water pearl) which is too high [ too much time spend?] , others are fine if you round it up, good price for something unique.

Re: Frustrated with Pricing formulas

Look really it boils down to the market YOU want to hit.

The same exact time can go for 20 bucks to 200 it's a matter of sales and presentation.

If YOU are comfortable where your prices are dont worry about it.

Re: Frustrated with Pricing formulas

Thanks, currently my prices are lower & it seems that to certain people even they are too high.

Raising prices is scary business!

Re: Frustrated with Pricing formulas

Raising prices is hard. I just got to the point where I knew how much I needed to make to pay bills and if no one wanted to pay that price then it was time to try another product. So far raising prices has worked really well for me. I also got professional photos done and I think that helped a lot too

Re: Frustrated with Pricing formulas

Hi Jamie,

I think the first one is a bit high but the others look right to me and I wouldn't question the price of them. (To me and what do I know?) it looks like a bracelet that comes already in a chain and the ends were added. That is a guess since I had no info to go by, tell me each link is hand made and then strung together and for me its a different story, the pricing would be about right. Yes, if that were the case I would have no trouble purchasing it.

I had the same trouble with our organic herbs vs some of the others listed here on Etsy but I had to stop and think ours ARE organic and I KNOW they are from ethical sources, fair trade that makes them a bit highter if the customer knows what they are looking at the prices are right on. The ones who question I can educate and let them make the decision, nothing else I can do. Sales for us have been increasing by almost double since the fall with the new price structure.

Hope this helps.

Re: Frustrated with Pricing formulas

Thanks!

@ karyn, the first one started as a spool if wire & pile of freshwater pearls so it is completely handmade-if it loks like all I did was add a clasp, I will take that as a compliment! =)

But I am still not sold on it being $68, more like $30...

Re: Frustrated with Pricing formulas

I agree that the pricing formula is problematic and doesn't apply across the board. I sell digital image downloads and people commonly think that these should sell for $1.00 each as if I haven't spent hours finding, improving, editing, photographing, advertising, and uploading the images. I only charge slightly more but I can tell I get less sales because of it. I offer bundle deals at a great discount, but still it's all very difficult. Some people value some work less than other. Maybe this isn't helpful, but go with your gut as to what you feel. Formulas aren't always in tune.

Re: Frustrated with Pricing formulas

See, that's why I could never use that formula for my items.
Example for the owl tote in my avatar
Cost for materials: $6
Time($10 an hour) 10x5 hours(to make) + $50.00
so $56 x 2 $112.00 for wholesale
$224.00 for retail hahaha
BTW I sell them for $34.00 and they dont sell very often at this rate because my competition is selling theirs for $22.00 sigh!

I dont even charge for the correct amount to cover my time.
At this formula I'm pretty much paying people to buy my items. :)
