Front Page Schmront Page!

I've tried and tried and I just can't do it.

I've seen so many shops with the white background that always seems to make FP. They're all lovely too. I just like a little color in my pics. I think I'm just going to accept that I'm ok with my photo style... even if I never make FP ***sigh*** :)

Just wondering if any of you have ever made FP with a non-white background?

Of course I know it occasionally happens, just wanting to get a personal glimmer of hope!

I'm with you I'm just addicted to color so front page maybe a little out of my reach as well. But there's nothing wrong with color in my book!!! Keep the colors coming and good luck with trying to get on the front page!

I've never even been in the same zip code as the front page, but I too, LOVE COLOR! And everytime I look at my shop, I love it. It's warm and inviting to me. If it never makes the front page, that's okay. White is for weinies! Kidding, kidding : )

And yet, it is the one piece of art in my whole shop with the least color. But I'm not complaining, it was great to be on the FP I hope I will make it again someday soon...

Nope. I think you have to tag the right way, have great pictures and be in lots of treasuries.

I completely agree! Why is that that the front page is so white or beige or grey..... I love color too and I keep thinking that they are going to get tired of the same look and go for something new. I actually went and put white backgrounds in a couple of my listing just hoping to have a chance.....of corse my items are all colorful anyway so its probably pointless I love the color revolution idea. Etsy, embrace the color!!!

Davs, that is a beautiful piece, congrats! Scan... no you don't HAVE to have a light color background, but for some reason, that's what Etsy loves! You'll notice when you check it out that most of the items on FP have white or very light color backgrounds.

I say go for color! I have white backgrounds for this shop, but my other knits shop is primarily natural, outdoor settings. I like to see things have a function, you know? Not just sit in a studio...

Wow ... I didn't realize that a light background was the common denominator. But it's true! I do have light backgrounds ... but I love color too ... and I've never been on the FP. Just works best for my work. Good luck to all, and if it's worth anything ... I've heard a lot of people say that they've been on the FP and it didn't generate any sales!

ok I just visited your shops... LOVE your items and love your color. I have worked and worked and worked on my photos and I think they always get a little bit better each time although they may never make it to the front page. I love etsy and the community of sellers here, but I truly try to drive my business in other ways as well and that seems to be the bets route for me rather than keep trying for the front page. Be confident in the look and style you have, love it and share it with all your might, be true to who you are and great things will happen - front page or not :) xo

I too have accepted that I'll never have anything on the FP or have one of my treasuries chosen for the FP for the same reason - etsy's apparent dislike of color at all, let alone bright, vibrant color.
I tried the white backgrounds on photos and didn't like it at all so I went back to my more "interesting" non-white backgrounds.
I can't believe that etsy wants not only white backgrounds for the FP but generally, imo, very boring treasuries: monochromatic, neutral colors. That's just not who I am at all - in fact I'm the opposite of that.
So when all is said and done, best to be true to yourself. Maybe someday the person or people choosing FP treasuries will be a color freak like we are!

I really like my natural wood backgrounds, but believe most treasuries (and the front page) prefer white. I'm trying, but white isn't my color so it might not work out. Best of luck to all of you.

CrazieHappy, I just clicked on your shop, and I LOVE your crazy color! I sold out and made my banner and avatar bland and boring, and I just don't feel quite right now. I've also changed most of my shop to Dullsville backgrounds to conform. The one place I still let loose is in my treasuries. I make them as fun and LOUD as possible!

I've also noticed Front Page is usally bland according to my taste. I LOVE color...which most of my treasuries reflect...except I think my lastest called "Smile!" was a bit more tame.

discobeach - I love the colored backrounds on your angels. It perks them up and gives them life! I got my shop critiqued early on and was told I should make my backrounds white. But I think the colorful backrounds grab your eye. Mostly the FP stuff seems to me is neutral colors, if not white.

I love color and texture in my photos and have never used a white background--and yet I have managed to make the Front Page a handful of times. This was probably the most colorful and busiest item that made it:

Of course like I stated in the OP they don't HAVE to be white... it just seems to be that more neutral colors are the general theme. Edera, beautiful earrings!

Thank you, QuirkyEssentials--you have a cute shop! And you're correct, there does seem to be a definite preference for white backgrounds and neutral colors--but I just wanted to say there is still hope for those with more vivid items :)

Maybe it isn't really the white background that they are after. I find that most of the items themselves are usually not too colorful. Maybe its that they are going for that kind of sophisticated boutique look. They seem to stay away from items that really look handmade. The photos are a bit minimalistic.
