For tags, do you repeat?

I was just wondering. Do any of you repeat the same words in your title in your 13 tags? For example, if you are listing an item "Bohemian Blue and Red Wallet", do you still repeat the word "red" or "blue" in your 13 tags or it's a waste of tag since the listing can already be detected from those words in your title of the listing.

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

I do. I'm not sure if it helps or not. I kind of see the title of your piece as a way for search engines like google to direct traffic to you and the tags as a way the people shopping directly on Etsy to get to your shop.

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

Thanks! You are right about the title for search engines and tags for etsy. I will keep my tags with all the main tags in them. :)

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

I simply don't understand tags at all! Put them in, because otherwise one cannot list an item, but don't see them actually helping the Cuddlies and I. Do wonder what I'm doing wrong, sometimes. Suggestions on improving mine very welcome. Thanks a lot. Isobel

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

Isobel - I looked at Ferdinand fox - not sure why as I have chickens and a foxes earth 20ft from the corner of the house AARGH. I - with no authority whatsoever would suggest getting rid of child friendly and anything else no one would search for and use colours - the fox and jacket as they might help to get you in a treasury.
Good luck and they look great!

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

Isobel - I agree with EAGERforWORD with taking out certain tags that no one will search for. Sometimes, I put myself in a buyer's shoes to get ideas what words I will use when trying to search for items online. Usually, it will be the type of style or colors.

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

Yes, that is the whole idea of the tags. You want to put yourself into the mind of the potential buyer and look for words which would best describe the item -- via color/texture/size/shape, etc. Hope this helps?

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

I repeat my title in my tags, too and not really sure if it helps, either. Just seems like a good idea to me and I hope it works for searches. I struggle with descriptions and tags, anyway.

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

I use as many words that describe my items as possible in the tags. Anything that someone might be looking for. Think outside the box. If somebody is struggling to find a gift, but have no idea what to get, crazy random things end up in searches. So, be crazy and random - as long as it describes your item, go for it, I say!

Having said that, I was a high school English teacher so words are not a problem for me. Now, photos, that's a different story!

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend!

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

Thanks so much for all your responses. Have been so much in the seller mindset since I became an Etsian, that the buyer angle has escaped me I think. Give me time, and I'll try to get my head into that mode: what with blogging, finding that the listing format had changed (without me knowing about it - the ABOUT bit at the top of each one!) etc. Anyone know how to get 48 hours into a day? That would help! Cheers, and good luck to everyone. Isobel

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

I read that Etsy gives a "Relevancy" search boost to items where the words in the title are repeated in the tags. My theory--not sure if I'm right--is that if it's an oddball item in a category with little competition, it's better to come up with fresh tags, because the search results won't be overwhelming to a potential buyer. If you're selling something really common, repeating the tags will give you a very important relevancy boost. Examples I can give (since I specialize in practical kitchen goods) is "electric frying pan" turns up few results, so the relevancy boost won't matter much, but "ice bucket" turns up a gazillion, so a relevancy boost will be important.

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

The Etsy Success Team guy that critiqued my shop (can't remember his name) said to repeat words from my titles in my tags. Previously, I did not repeat them because I didn't want to "waste" my tags since it was already in my title. But, that was the advice he gave me!

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

Thanks everyone for the great advices! From what I've gathered from the advices from everyone, the conclusion is to keep them in. I'm actually planning to take them all out initially but thought I should just check if I'm making a wrong move. Thank God I've asked. :) :)

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

This has been very helpful, I was avoiding doubling up words as well but will have another look at my tags, this is an area that I struggle with too, probably need to set aside a chunk of time to research, I like the idea of becoming the buyer to see what turns up and thinking outside the box for more original searches. I'm never sure exactly where my things fit in so I also struggle a little with categories!

Re: For tags, do you repeat?

You should repeat them! Google search reads your title to find you, and search in Etsy works with the tags, so if you want to be friends with both you should repeat your title in the tags.
