First bulk order - help! :)

Hey y'all! I just got a request to do a bulk order of necklaces (120) due in May. I am really excited but have no idea the best way to do this. If I normally charge $25/necklace how much should I charge to give her a price break? Also should I ask for a deposit before hand? Any other tips would be great! Thanks!

Wow! That's a huge amount!!! I can imagine your excitement!!! I would give it to her, her total being exactly $3,000 (WOW) for $100 less than that. It might seem like a lot, but with that huge of an order, I think you cold afford to help her out a little!
I would DEFINATELY make her purchase AND PAY before you start to make those 120 necklaces!
I would put in a huge thank you note, handwritten, so it's ore thankful seeming and personal(: IMHO

Thanks for the help! So give her a $100 break on the $3,000 is what you're saying?

Re: First bulk order - help! :)

It depends on what your costs are to produce it. Jewelry is usually priced using a formula that takes under consideration the cost of materials, overhead of running the business, hourly rate of labor, and any desired profit margin. For bulk orders, you should give a price based on the adjusted per piece cost. For example, you may save money on packaging and costs associated with promoting and marketing 120 necklaces on an individual basis. Don't guess about what your break even point is or how much of a discount you can offer - that's part of why so many new business fail. And definitely get a non refundable deposit on the front end before beginning work if you aren't confident you can resell the necklaces if the deal falls through.

Definitely get her to pay ahead of time because someone made me set up a large custom listing once and I ordered the supplies and they never paid.

Re: First bulk order - help! :)

Ok here's what I've come up with y'all let me know how this sounds. My retail price of $25 is pretty spot on using the formula (cost of materials+expenses+ labor). When I subtract my normal packaging and etsy fees the retail price is $23.98 and the whole sale price is $22.39. So if I take $1.02 off for each necklace her total coat $2877.70 Does this sound like a fair price?

Yes I would make her pay first, I have had people request large orders, I get them all made up and never hear from them again! They do sell eventually but it's just the time and money you have invested in it already!

Re: First bulk order - help! :)

What is she expecting to pay? Did she expect it would be full price for the 120 necklaces? (Your price seems very reasonable, even low, so she's getting a great deal).

Definitely ask for all or most up front. The absolute minimum I would even consider would be half up front, before you purchase materials or begin the work, and then the remainder due when the work is finished but before it is shipped. And that is the *minimum*. Full payment up front would not be unusual.

Congrats on such a nice big order!

Thanks guys! New territory for me! She asked me if she ordered that many if I could give her a price break. I will definitely ask for the money up front. I've got a while to work on them since she doesn't need them
Until may.

Re: First bulk order - help! :)

If she's in TX and I'm in Ms do I need to charge her sales tax on her order?

I don't think sales tax matters for different states! :D
