Facebook pages - where's your line?

Okay, I have an issue and want to know if other people feel the same way or if I'm just being a big ol' misery lol! Here's the thing... I have a Facebook page for my business where I do all the usual Facebook stuff and welcome both private individuals and other businesses to interact and say hello. Networking is good and I love to do it, on that I'm clear! However, I have noticed a bit of a growing trend for people to visit me and take out half page adverts on my space without bothering to engage with me or anything on my page at all. Not even a 'hello'. Sometimes they will qualify their presence with the fact that they are from Etsy, but then proceed to do a full paragraph write up on their business, sometimes followed by a large image of one of their items. This is where I start to get irritated. I know we all need to help each other out with exposure and I am usually quite happy for someone to visit and post a greeting line or two from their shop name with a link to their page. I even regularly pick and promote items I like from other sellers on my page. But I've had days when my own posts are being driven off my own wall by people taking up half a screen of space. I've even had people tagging me in pictures of their stock so that it will come up on my photos page. This just feels like spam...well no, it doesn't feel like spam, it IS spam!! I have taken to deleting offending posts, which I always feel bad about because I know we are all in the same boat trying to make something work, on the other hand I feel irritated that I'm having to spend my time doing that. How do other people feel about this kind of thing? Is there some kind of common etiquette about what's acceptable in this area? How do others deal with this issue? Am I just being an old misery (no don't answer that :D!!)?

I have to admit I totally delete posts like that and don't feel bad about it. If someone stops by my page, says they like my stuff and are from etsy as well, and post a link to their shop or facebook page, that's fine. But if they just stop by and paste on an ad, uh, no, my facebook page is not a bulletin board!

Nobody's found me yet as I only have 10 likes, but I'm with everyone else, delete it as soon as you see it. There is even the option to delete and ban that person from posting again....

Re: Facebook pages - where's your line?

Those sound like very clear spam to me. The posts I get are more gray area... something like "Hello, I'm Pam from Cool Crafty Crap!* I just wanted to say that I love your work!" with a link to their Etsy page. Those irritate me, but maybe other people don't mind if it's disguised as a friendly greeting?

When you edit your page you can set your wall to show only your own posts by default- that way your fans will never see the spam unless they specifically click to show posts from "everyone". I think you can also disable photo and link posting.

*If there really is a Pam with a store called Cool Crafty Crap, I apologize :)

Amber Elledge from StarlessClay says

Bahahahahahahahahahahaah

But I don't think it's rude to delete either. In fact, I'm even getting to the point where I want to yell at people who post a billion pictures of their own items on Etsy threads where one person asks a genuine question about one of their own items. People can be so rude and pushy about their shops.

Re: Facebook pages - where's your line?

Thanks All, that actually makes me feel much better about just deleting things :)! I will also have a closer look at what I can do with regards to settings to prevent people doing it in the first place. I just don't get why people don't realise how counter-productive it is. You might get your ad up there for a little while but then risk being reported for spamming, annoy people who may have actually decided to post up one of your pieces if you'd not been so pushy, have all reference to your store completely deleted from a page because you tried to dominate it as well as potentially losing fans. Overall not a good strategy. Now I'm thinking about this I'm wondering why on earth I've been feeling guilty lol! Thanks for your support :) x

Re: Facebook pages - where's your line?

I agree! How rude! I Would delete the posts too. They can make there own page or promote their stuff on the FB Etsy page! I'm fine with promoting, but not having a page to have for someone else to use as their soapbox. Our pages are our own soapboxes, right?

Just to help our Etsy friends promote, I posted your beautiful goddess necklace on my page.
Happy sales!

Bev - thank you! I'm really glad you like that one. The Uffington White Horse is one of our well-known ancient chalk figures here in the UK. There's a number of different ones in that area of the country carved into the sides of the chalk hills. They are huge and totally fascinate me :) x

Kelli - thank you so much for posting my goddess necklace :). It had been being a little neglected in the shop for some reason, but has had quite a bit more attention now - much appreciated :) x

Re: Facebook pages - where's your line?

I don't mind the "Pam - Cool Crafty Crap" type posts. It lets me know how the person found me and makes it easy to check out their page. But when the posting of their own products begins, that's an automatic delete!

Re: Facebook pages - where's your line?

Glad I found this discussion! I've had a post on my FB page for several days ("Hi from your newest fan" ... with a big ol' pic to HER Etsy shop). I clicked "Hide" ... and FB (in all its f'd up wisdom) marked it as spam. I just wanted to hide it, but it was still showing, so I clicked Hide again ... and again it marked it as spam. WTF? I finally just deleted it. LOL!

Re: Facebook pages - where's your line?

I have my FB page set up so that initially you can only see what I post but w/ the option at the top to see all posts made by me and others.
I don't mind when people tag themselves in a comment. I do however mind when they leave a huge blurb about what they offer, products, sales and what not. I don't dig that and I delete it as soon as I see it.
I don't dig when people are so nervy to advertise themselves to me and my fans w/ those long wordy ad/posts.
Totally bugs me.

Re: Facebook pages - where's your line?

You can change the settings so things are a little tighter. Also, post something in the info section to let people know they don't have your permission to do that and that if they do their posts will be deleted. Then just delete the posts. If you have that clause, you don't even need to say anything. It's your page...so you are free to run it as you wish. You wouldn't let anyone come camp in your home and take over your home! :-)

Re: Facebook pages - where's your line?

I wouldn't feel bad about deleting it. They are taking advantage of you and your facebook page and abusing their privileges in the name of "networking"--what they really want is free advertising. If people are abusing it, then I'd delete their posts. Sorry...I know it's frustrating!
