Facebook Promotion

I came across this article on Facebook promotion: http://www.forbes.com/sites/elandekel/2013/01/22/facebook-pages-are-a-bad-investment-for-small-busin...

I was really drawn to read it by the title, because I was contemplating paying for advertisement for my Facebook "fan page".
It seems like people's behaviour on Facebook, and therefore, your possible clients' behaviour is not as predictable as you'd think. You should read the full article, but long story short: a massive amount of people "like" something either in a trance, with no real intentions to check out your posts (because "likes" are no longer worth anything) or they "like" it because it's the cool thing to do (because 50 of their friends have pushed the "like" button before them and Facebook won't let them forget that).
This would subsequently make Facebook a bad place for advertising your small business and a waste of money.
What do you think?

Re: Facebook Promotion

Will be back to read the article.
I'm torn between paying and not paying for FB ads but it seems I will wait for a while and see how things are going.

Thank you for sharing :)

Re: Facebook Promotion

Interesting, but my experience of advertising on Facebook doesn't correlate at all, I have reached out to a lot of people around the world through facebook ads (I got around 4,000-4,500 fans through ads, the rest through regular promoting and networking) and many of them have become genuine fans who are regularly active on my page and buy from me too! My 'talking about this' stats shot up from 80 on a good day (when I only had the fans 800 or so I had earned the hard way) to 1,000 to 1,500 now on a good day since advertising for a week to ten days there, and this has been pretty consistently maintained for a few months now. A few of my better posts about new things I've made have gotten over 150 likes, which is amazing promotion! If you are running the ads you need to have a plan for what you are going to do while they run. I made sure I had tonnes of great new images to share, so when people clicked onto my page from the ad they were instantly engaged with new stuff to like, share and comment on. I also made sure to show a range of different products so there was bound to be something to get you interested. I also recommend using your absolute best product pic for the ad, I used a really colorful picture of a peacock necklace. I highly recommend it based on my own experience :)

Re: Facebook Promotion

Thank you for sharing your experience, Kay! It seems like the results of using advertising can vary a lot and I guess a huge chunk of these variations are related to the budget you intend to use. I was thinking of using the ads for only a few days, since that's all I can afford at the moment, but I think it's best to use that money for new supplies instead or something palpable, if you know what I mean.
It's great that you managed to engage so many people through Facebook, tho. I only have 32 likes so far, but they're not from my target audience: they're just friends, family and other sellers from Etsy. Hm

Re: Facebook Promotion

There's been a lot if controversy within the blogging community about people buying their FB Fan Page "Likes." It would be much like buying Twitter followers. There's a difference between buying likes, and taking out FB ads for likes.

It's easy to tell who buys their Likes because if the majority are from a particular country where your normal fan base is not, that would raise a red flag with me.

I prefer to gather my Likes organically.
