Ok, just signed up, but now I have a question - Can you sign up for more than one shop section? Or if you want more than one section, do you have to promote your entire shop?
So we're basically paying for what used to be free, as free spots will now be filled with paid spots. This is less useful for buyers. This is not something to be excited about, in my opinion. Now, perhaps if you're one of very few people doing it, or if you have a large advertising budget, it might be better. But, if not, it will be worse. Those with deep pockets will be able, even more than ever, to crush those with smaller advertising budgets. To think this is a panacea for low sales, is, I think, mistaken.
Um, ya not so sure about this. So does this mean that anyone who has NOT paid for the ads, then their item will not be searched...?

MirroredSkyCreations, asks a great question above. Let me clarify and clear up any confusion as that is not how Search Ads will work.
Your $.20 listing fee puts your item in search for 4 months (until your item expires or is sold). Therefore, your items will still be searchable if you decide to not use Search Ads. Search Ads will replace the Recently Listed row you see now when you search. For an example of what Search Ads will look like in action, see the first image (below the video) in the blog post, here:

Hope this helps!

So we are paying for what we are currently getting for free?
I am asking if our recently listed items will go away and be replaced with paid ads? I have quite a few items that come up at the top as recently listed because those keywords have few items in them and after next week I will loose those free spots and will have to pay for them if I still want them there?

Yes, that appears to be the case. And here people are all excited about it. I've worked hard on relevancy, and am the top of relevancy on lots of my items. I don't think this is going to be a game changer, really, because the items there aren't many of, people will look at them anyway. I think the difference will be that those who don't do optimize for Etsy relevancy and want to spend a fair amount on advertising will get quite a bit more exposure. And, I think it will be kind of annoying to buyers. Personally, I like to see the newly listed items, without having to change to "Most Recent" search, since the "Most Recent" search tends to get items that aren't necessarily very relevant. I'm not very happy about this change, but I do understand they're trying to find a revenue replacement since there is now a disincentive for relisting items frequently.
I didn't realize search ads would replace the recently listed section. That's really a bummer for those of us who don't have a big advertising budget and have worked hard to get our items to appear in those sections by optimizing for relevancy.

I've selected to promote a section of my shop. What if the keywords that you think are important don't show up in the keyword section? We cannot add them either. The keyword "jacquard ribbon" or just "jacquard" is the top keyword search on my Shop Stats. Will this affect my search ads to get searched?
I was going to try the Search Ads until the top keywords in my shop stats report do not show up as keywords for the Etsy Search Ads. The words that etsy selected as keywords are not from my tags....some are colors describing a hat. I'm not sure what will be searched. I wish there was a better explaination somewhere. I feel lost.
Nineheads, Scrubhatstore, and PSProducts - I have that same question. Sent an e-mail to Etsy but haven't heard back. My top keywords are not showing up in the option either and like you all said, we can't add keywords to the list. What's up with that????
