Etsy Ads - Promoted Listings

Jump to solution
Hi all!

I just wanted to ask, what was your experience with etsy promoted listings? Did it work for you? Which type of item seems to work best being promoted? Is it worth promoting your most popular items, or boosting the less popular?

It's weird when you search something, and you get the promoted ad at the top, and then the item is the first listing to show (for free) as well! Surely that means, it wasn't worth paying to promote?

How much does it cost - did you find the cost was worth it? How long does the promotion last?

Discuss! :)
(Thanks everyone!)

Amazon pays google for ads for searches for "amazon," meaning they're both an ad result and the first organic result.

Surely their SEO/marketing guys aren't idiots, so I figure there is some benefit to it. :)

We run promoted listings for our best click-converters

I sold three items last month using Promoted Listings. I use the Customized Bid setting and promote everything in my shop at $.10 a click. The ad prices are based off your item prices, so more expensive items have a higher price per click. If I set it at ten cents, I don't overspend, but I still get exposure. My daily budget is $5. Some people only promote certain listings - I find it better - for ME - just to run the whole shop.

erin, I wonder if that is because your photography is so consistently good? For us, half of my photography is good (the half I paid someone else to photograph), but the ones that I did myself are not generally good enough to get decent clicks for (and the clicks I do get are less likely to convert).

definitely important to limit the bid price; I set them well lower than Etsy advised and still make okay $ with it - maybe 5% of total sales, but it's pretty cheap and 5% is 5%, after all.

If I could find another advertising platform that was as easy to use and as good a ROI, I'd do it in a second. (well, when I have a free second, anyway)

I'm still not too sure about Promoted Listings. Last month I paid 1/3 of my total Etsy earnings to promoted listings. I currently list almost all of my items under promoted listings and do get a lot of traffic from them, but to pay 250+ a month for advertising is kinda counterproductive. Any advice is greatly appreciated :)

what is your return on investment for the ads? (approximately, assuming your customers only ever buy the one thing). Have you looked through the stats to determine which items make more $ and which make less?

Hi Stacy, Promoting your items is a great tool to get you're items noticed. Rather than promoting all of them, why not pick three that best represent your shop? Using your most popular items will bring customers into your shop where they will see everything thing else you have to offer.

Check last months key words/tags that were used the most and be sure to use these on "less viewed" items provided they fit the item.
Also, lower your bid amount for promoting. You can control all aspects of your advertising budget which is wonderful.

I haven't used promoted listings in quiet a while cause I wasn't having any luck.

I haven't had much luck promoting anywhere. I'm chalking that up to my pictures needing work, and not promoting in the right places.

Hi hi,
I have been doing auto-bidding on almost all my items.
I've spent about $180 on it. I think I've only been doing it for about 1 month. And I have made around $600. I think it is worth it, but yeah, I really should be reducing the bid amounts. I hope this helps. (:

I've been on promoted listings for about 12 days so far, which isn't long enough to come to any conclusions about anything much. I am slowly adjusting my price upwards, but as I've hardly spent 70 cents so far total, I think I need to go a bit higher ;-) to get more clicks. Plenty of impressions, so my work gets seen more than it did, and impressions are free, so I look on it as a positive, even if the impressions don't lead to clicks or sales directly for a while.
