Do you prefer to see an item being worn or displayed?

When it comes to taking photos for my items, I have a couple jewelry holders that I use to display them. I also use a white background, but I do have someone who could model the items for my photos.

I've seen in other shops where people use mannequins or have models to show their pieces. Do you prefer to see an item being worn or used by a person/model or displayed in a more neutral way?

When it comes to clothing, I like to see the way it lies on a person when it's worn. It's easier for me to visualize how the clothing will appear on me, too. When it comes to jewelry, which is what my shop is based around, I enjoy some of the backgrounds that people use. I really like the outdoor photos that people use, or when they use wood, rocks, or nature in the background to display the item. At the same time, I also like when they're displayed on a simple jewelry stand or white background. I like the photos of earrings hanging off a stand or from a mug, but when I see a photo of someone wearing them I sometimes wonder if the item I'd be buying is the one from the photo, like if the quantity is just listed as one and it's not a mass-produced item -- hopefully that makes sense.

How do you like to see the items you're browsing through to be displayed? Do you prefer a model to see how an item fits, or an example of the item fitting in the type of environment it will be in, or do you like it on a plain background without other items in the picture?

I like initial photo to just be the item, then use other pix to show it on a person.

If its anything but earrings id like to see it on someone. But the thought of earrings being worn by someone else icks me out. Unless stated the earrings I'm getting are not the ones in the photo

I prefer the item displayed on a jewelry bust...but it can work well if the item is shot as a close up on a model!

I model everything for photos. I have my ear-wires for photos and I ALWAYS change those to unworn ear wires after I do a photo-shoot and I let people know that in the listing. I always assumed everyone did that and knew that others did that, but I've learned you have to let people know.

I would never buy anything online that I didn't see modeled on someone. That's just me.

Also, as far as jewelry and clothing- you are not only selling an item but selling an image. Flesh out that image with a model, if you can.

It depends on the item, earrings never worn, clothing, however, doesn't look good on a hanger or on the floor.

Re: Do you prefer to see an item being worn or displayed?

For clothing and jewelry (items that go on the body), it is best to display them yourself or on a mannequin. Why? because even with measurements listed, many people cannot visual the size. Ive sold online for a total of 14 yrs, and I worked in fine jewelry too, and believe me when I say that it sold when they saw it "on", not on a hanger or laying on a table display. My items now are not on a mannequin only because I do it for fun now, and sold my female mannequin from my ebay business I did full time as a "job". If you don't want to wear earrings yourself because of health issues, and don't have a mannequin head, hold them up with your finger tips or set them next to something like a dime or quarter so people can "see" the size.

PS: many people don't like to buy clothing that they "see" on a person in photos, especially items that are against your body like tops, pants, and the like. If you want maximum sales, and your serious about selling, I would highly suggest investing in a full body mannequin. There are great deals on them in online auctions at "buy it now" prices. Make sure the seller has a great feedback score first. It is an investment that you will be glad you made if you plan on selling clothing for some time.

Good tips, Classy. It amazes me that people buy new clothing from retail stores which contain cancer causing and hormone disrupting hazardous chemicals but buying something handmade that was "next to someone's skin" is a problem. But alas, that's the way it is and we need to account for it.
