Discount codes for returning customers?

I was reading on etsy blog last week about encouraging repeat cusomters and one way was by offering coupon codes with purchases to encourage repeat customers.I've been thinking the idea over and maybe offering a different promotion every month.

But i was wondering how many other shops do something like this or if you have any other ideas/suggestions?

I'm really interested to hear from sellers what you find what works best.

I offer 10% discount to returning customers. I have it on a card that I send with the purchase. I have yet to actually have anybody utilize the code, but I just started doing it!

I've been doing this for quite a while now. I offer a discount to my repeat buyers. I give them the code on my business card which I include in their package. And now, I also give it to them when I do their shipping notification.

I offer a free shipping coupon code in my automatic "message to buyer" section at checkout.

I give a 15% discount via shipping notification and I also put Business cards with their package that are "For A Friend" for 10% off.

I always offer 10% off code to customers. I was thinking about doing what Casey does as well with the "for a friend" card. I think that's a great idea.

My shop is new and I made 4 sales last week and have sent 10% off cards to all customers. I do like the idea of the 10% for a friend; I think I will start that as well.

Yes! I wish I had started doing it sooner. It was an instrumental piece in developing a following. Adding an expiration date helped, too.

Humm I'm new in Cupon Codes. I've just made one for repeated customers with 10% off every item in my shop.
But now how do you suggest me to advertise my customers. Is it ok to send them a message? And is there any way to give them the cupon code or simply tell them the code I choose?

I just got my first order from the "For a Friend" card the other day! And they bought 2 bags!

I include a handwritten note with a discount code (for 15%) with each outgoing order. I have yet to have anyone use it, but have received a few notes thanking me for the code and they will be back.

I'm hoping to turn some of my old customers into repeat customers this holiday season.

I do a 15% off code in every shipment. Haven't had anyone utilize it yet though. I just sent my first card out that had a "free shipping" code in it. I read somewhere that people like free shipping more than saving a certain amount on the order. Thought I'd give it a go.
