Custom Orders

I was wondering what you all charge for custom orders, especially if the customer asks for a new design--not just a different color of one of your designs. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Re: Custom Orders

I determine the cost to me in supplies plus the time and labor involved in creating a new pattern or altering an old one. Plus profit. Customs generally cost more than ready to ship because I have to track down the supplies I'll need and create something completely new which can be time consuming to get the pattern just right.

Re: Custom Orders

So many variables. If the item is something that I already create but is wanted in different colors maybe a dollar or 2 more. If I don't have those colors but have to order it I usually charge for the amount used since I'll use the rest in something else. If the order is for something to draw and create a new pattern for and buy a load of materials for that's a whole other story.

It all depends on what the custom request is.

Re: Custom Orders

I dont have an exact formula but like others mentioned it depends on the complexity of the item ordered and how difficult it will be for me to obtain the supplies.

Re: Custom Orders

Every time you create a new design it adds to your portfolio, it show cases you as a designer. I embrace new and different custom work, it helps me grow as a designer. I have a formula of double- triple supplies and then 50% labor. With custom work I always get 50% down and then send pics of finished product before shipping. You have to create a formula that works for you, keeping in mind every time you make something new the first time it usually takes a little longer. All the best :)

Re: Custom Orders

I would suggest stating all of the above info to the customer up-front. Let them know about the additional materials required and let them know of your timeline so they can understand that you are serious about your crafting process. Also, let them know about the price at the beginning. I read a thread last week about how someone was expecting a lower price for a custom order, and was upset at the end.

Re: Custom Orders

I remember that post, Aman. I was so surprised about them wanting it for less money.

Re: Custom Orders

My customer is an artist who saw my work at a show I just finished. She actually said she expected to pay more for custom work, but I have not really charged for 'custom' work in the past, so I was trying to get an idea of what to charge. I love experimenting with design, so I look upon it as a challenge--as Suzie noted--it adds to my portfolio.
